Yeah the whole issue with modern Sonic is that they just port the same SA gameplay to newer titles, and SA gameplay is really simplistic and easy. Sonic's original 2D gameplay was a physics platformer, which is way easier to implement, which is why Sonic Mania and fan games can still be good. What Sega needs to do is drop the SA control scheme entirely and try to make a new 3D style. Homing attack is awful, even on paper.

If I had to give a serious guess, it's because Sega wants to do more IP crossover stuff with other companies, which means elements of certain characters (e.g., Rouge's boobs) need to be "toned down" in order to maintain a given standard of family-level appropriateness across the cast.

I enjoyed Forces, though it's short as fuck. The problem is that there's like 3 gameplay styles (hero character, 2D classic sonic, 3D sonic) and you never get time to adjust to any of them.
