That way thinking diminishes the contents of games and puts the worth of the game on the attachment to the IP. The games should speak for themselves and boy do they. Zelda is currently the best example of not needing a connection with the series to enjoy it. The series was settling around 5m give or take a couple million either way with the best seller TP at 10m. BOTW comes along and sells 30m and counting. TOTK is at 20m and counting. Both games have sold at least double TP and magnitudes higher than every other entry. Where did these 10m+ new fans from, they obviously not older/existing Zelda fans? It's a tidal surge of new fans many of who will of course be kids but also a massive number will be adults that never touched Zelda previously but have since jumped onboard.
Same with other Nintendo franchises:
Animal crossing had a fuck ton of adults playing during covid pushing it to become one of the best selling games of the last generation.
Splatoon has quickly become Nintendo most competitive series and taken over Japan even though the series is only 10yo so anyone who played as a kid is either still a kid or young adult at most.
Kirby peaked in sales on the Gameboy decades ago with 5m and Forgotten Land on switch is at 7m and counting again showing more new fans jumping on board.
Luigi's Mansion 3 sold 15m easily beating the 6.5m of LM2on DS. That's Luigi, the now butt of jokes brother to the famous Mario.
