recommend me some less popular/older action games pls

I tried getting into shmups a while ago and realized something: while I do like the gameplay, their gameplay loop of playing the same ~30 minutes over and over again chasing high scores/1cc just doesn't appeal to me
So I realize I might be asking for something impossible, but are there shmups that instead of being extremely short games meant to be replayed for high scores are more like regular games, where you're following a more in-depth story and progressing through stages in order to reach the ending?

I've posted my cart before but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Thinking about getting Octopath Traveler, I've played the demo for 2 and had fun. But as you can see it's over half of my cart's total cost.
I'm thinking about just getting the 1st one for now. Do these games have high replay value? I've played as Ochette and apparently you can meet other characters later on.

Well, we broke up 2 months ago and went no contact since and even though i was busy with work and some other stuff i managed to control it well. They're like at a middle point between what you don't like about shmups and what you're looking for.
Maiden & Spell is a bit unusual, it's kinda like if a shmup was also a fighting game for the most part. But it's really fun if you can get into the loop and pretty story-focused (the stories are super simple though).

Doesn't have to really involve witch mechanics, but so long as I can play as a cute witch

I just ran through cauldron. Had a bunch of minigames with progression and an autobattler mechanic, overall fun. Honestly I expected to refund it and was surprised how much I liked bouncing around the different minigames.

Not that anon but no. The apple minigame is the only one that really transforms in interesting ways. The fishing minigame gets "better" but is powerup spam and the mining minigame does become a cool challenge of stacking multipliers but is way too RNG to be fun. The other minigames are a 3/10 vampire survivors clone and an absolutely dogshit iceblock clearing game, both of which feel really tacked on.

The fishing one was the only minigame I didn't enjoy. The mining one was one of my favorite at the start. Once you get suitably upgraded, it just becomes chaining the multiplier bonus together with collecting bombs.
There are mining puzzles for collecting spirit which are non-randomized later, which are better than the fucking ice fishing bullshit.
I wish the ice collecting game had better UI/controls.

Ignore Ginga Force and Natsuki. The games are very grindy and you're basically forced to replay each level 30 times before you can progress. Your weapons are not strong enough to kill basic enemies and to unlock better weapons you first have to beat the level you need them for. It's the fucking opposite of what you asked for.
Also the fucking story happens DURING gameplay. You're dodging 200 bullets and there is a tiny text box in the top right of the screen that you have no time to read, so unless you can speak Japanese and listen to the audio, you will miss a lot of the story.

Hellsinker and Zeroranger are regular shmups and especially Hellsinker is gonna rape you if you're new to shmups.

Has anyone played this? I like the idea of the X games, but they kinda seem to be autistic spreadsheet simulators, plus they also have some 4X strategy stuff in that I don't care about.
From what I've read, Rebirth is streamlined and more focused on combat, which seems right up my alley. Reviews were abysmal when it launched, but the newer ones always mention how the devs fixed the game through 3 years of updates and that it's basically singleplayer Elite Dangerous.

It's one of a very particular style of Chinese metroidvania with tweened animations, overly complex story triggers that break constantly, and spammy combat. Similar to Vigil or Awaken. They all play about the same, they're all reasonably solid mechanically but very strange because of the poor translations, and it's damn near impossible to beat one without accidentally sequence breaking or fucking something up.

It's a fucking weird game. Insane number of equipment slots, byzantine skill and crafting system predicated on finding books in the environment, odd presentation all around. I loved the first few hours when it wasn't clear what the scope or scale of the game was, and the first area is full of secrets, cool areas to explore, and ways to upgrade your equipment. Once I got past that and was 10 or so hours in the game started to fall apart with mandatory NPC followers and grindier and grindier combat until I eventually dropped it. If you come at it expecting something like Dungeon Siege it's going to feel like it falls apart about where you'd expect the first act to end, but if you're willing to take it on its own merits and play it until you stop having fun it's a decent time.

Already finished general horse and replaying it to try all the other options.

I've read the early Max Payne games have issues running on modern systems. I'm not sure how involved the fix might be to get them working. I've played through Max 1+2 a few times but it was so long ago the fix I used was for like win XP.

Crafting has timers which might annoy you and some items can't be teleported, but you can turn both of those off in the settings. The recipes themselves don't really get difficult though there's no huge trees or anything to make one item.

Only bought Metal Garden so far. You can beat it in like an hour and a half. Atmosphere is amazing, gameplay is your basic baby's first shooter, but they have a bunch of modifiers to try and make replayability a thing. 3.5/5.

Gameplay is not it's strongest suit but it's basically GotG the movie in gaming form. Same humor, same non-stop character talk, same soundtrack, same goofyness. Gamora is hotter in the game too.
Another thing that I liked is facial animations. Honestly feels like movie quality mocap compared to what you get in most modern AAA games.

I don't have the game installed atm but can you also change the timer for dialogues in the difficulty tweaks? That's about the only thing that annoyed me, that you can't hear the dialogue until the end when you're forced into a timed dialogue choice, and I didn't bother to look for anything related to that in the settings.
