The gamecube was fun and a lot of the games had a cool twist to them that broke the mold of the series.

Sony had no major game studios when making the PS1 so they bent over backwards for third party game devs and publishers and basically bought their way into the industry. While this allowed some hidden gems that might not exist otherwise it lead to a flood of low effort shovelware that spread to the other systems in later gens and it tipped the balance of power in favor of third party developers who began demanding things from the major console developers and dictating what a game system should be rather than the other way around as it should be. On top of this Sega was shitting the bed with the Saturn's terrible architecture and Nintendo refused to rely on an outsider to make a CD drive so third party game devs and publishers were stuck between a rock and hard place, but Sony entering the industry gave them an easy way out.

Sony's "magnum opus" the PS2 as a cheap DVD player marketed as a game console. Leading to a large hyper casual consumer base that bought it as a DVD player first and a game system second meaning that even when "Playstation has no freaking games" there was still a reason to buy the system. This hyper casual audience would go on to buy the PS3 for it's Blu-Ray player and became addicted to cinematic movie games like The Last of Us due to their lack of any real gameplay.

Now with the PS4 and especially the PS5 the concept of game systems also playing media is now a feature nobody cares about so there's no more reason to buy a Sony system for it's non-gaming features meaning Sony's systems now have sell themselves based on their library of exclusive games and in the age when every third party wants their games on as many platforms as possible Sony can no longer rely on third party for exclusives like they did in the PS1 and PS2 days unless they shill out a ton of money meaning Sony systems now have to stand on solely on their exclusive first party games and their exclusive first party games alone which has always been Sony's biggest weak point.

This is always so weird for me, because for me, being roughly the same age as Scott, I never heard anyone talk about the PS2 like, ever. I never played videogames till I was like 10, and didn't have internet either. I only heard people talking about the Gamecube or Xbox, and as far as I was aware, PC Gaming started and ended with Jump Start games on CD.
I guess without internet, it was far easier to just live in information deadzones if no one in your life happened to have or discuss a specific thing, even if said thing was the highest-selling console of all time.

The games people actually go back to replay are mostly from the Gamecube, or are multiplat like San Andreas or Okami. Despite it selling poorly at the time, the Gamecube won in the long run because it had more good games than the competition. The games have two completely different demand curves, where a 50$ price point satisfied 33% of potential melee customers while it satisfied 10% of potential brawl customers. 90% of wii owners thought that brawl wasnt worth 50$, and a small fraction of those who did will continue to hold on to the game if you offered them 150 for it. Compare to melee which has an attach rate of 33%, where while some of the audience would balk at a higher price point a significant proportion would still be willing to hold. Gamecube was literally just a Zelda machine for me, and it still was better than the PS2.

You can literally see the N64 impact game design and even hardware design in realtime, the Gamecube on the otherhand, well you've got Pikmin, that recieved a bunch of semi clones like Little King Story and Overlord. Gamecube was the first console with programmable shaders but that feature came to PCs earlier that same year, the GCs controller layout would later become the industry standard, analogue triggers would also see widespread adoption in following generations.

Naughty dog was 100% correct changing jaks tone. If you don’t know they playtested early jak 2 with like 11 year olds and one of them said “yeah this seems fine for my little brother” so they changed jak2 to be gta lite to appeal to them. Gameboy Advance and the DS were the influential Nintendo products on our generation.
Gamecube wasn’t that popular but did have a few cool games.

In theory but i think passing the controller makes taking turns actually improved the experience. Everyone is focused on one thing and watching a rampage in gta was so much fun nobody really cared that much watching someone else. Party games half of the time everyone is just doing their own thing, you might as well be playing solo.
Im telling you this is a core memory, we had the option of playing gamecube party games which we did sometimes, but 8/10 times it was 3-4 guys taking turns playing gta in the back of my friends house in his musty ass room talking and drinking mtn dew.
We did actually play n64 mario party 2, mario kart and poke stadium minigames more than anything on gamecube but we were also younger too
