Until then it'd been super lighthearted and extremely thin, you just go to a place and help a God and then they shuffle you onto the next place to help the next God. Then suddenly the amnesia plotline that I'd practically forgotten about actually mattered, and you've got Kaguya and Subaru's past, and you find out they were practically sent out from their village as sacrificial lambs, then they both sacrificed themselves to try save the other, and the only difference between them was the Dragon they got.

It's not the deepest or most dramatic story, but I'd already mentally concluded that the game wasn't going to do more than the bare minimum excuse plot. Being hit with actual emotional stakes and character motivations was really surprising. No wonder Kaguya feels like someone you should actually care about.

You need to explain what you're looking for. I've got put about 60hrs into it and I've had a great time.

It's got a simple but evocative story. It's got really good characters with nice stories and events. It's got engaging combat, and it's got pretty enjoyable farming mechanics along with a fairly detailed village building system.

It's got more meat on it than Sakuna, but it doesn't get anywhere near into the farming details as Sakuna. If you want to get into the nitty gritty of farming and growing and will enjoy a deep focus on all the smaller aspects then I thoroughly recommend Sakuna. If you're not so worried about that and just wanna grow a variety of produce, meet and romance various people, and follow a variety of stories, then I'd heartily recommend GoA. Ultimately they're both great games.

One subtle characterization bit for Amber I like is that during fishing festivals, she's in a more noticeably damp mood than usual. If you remember, Amber fucking hates fish. Live and raw ones especially. So naturally, a whole fucking day dedicated to the bane of her existence is a bad day for her.

The fact that it is possible to do that with some effort in previous games, which you can't even do that here. Forging Rune Legend +1000 at least takes some effort and copious amount of grinding. You have to actually go out and engage with the crafting mechanic to get god mode in RF4, but in Azuma you play at hard and can just shit on everything with the starting sword and relics without engaging with any other game mechanics at all.

What RF3/4 got right that GoA fails at is how literally every system feeds into each other forming a really fucking addicting loop.

In 3/4, farming increases your farming skill level. But your farming skill level actually also increases your max HP/RP and decreases RP consumption by a certain amount. So you're actually incentived to farm. Not to mention the runeys that crops occasionally spawn, which in turn also increases random skill levels.
Can't create that meme weapon because crafting eats all your RP at once? Then do chores nigga. Farming, Logging and Mining skill levels increases your max HP/RP. Just by running your farm, you increase your max RP, which allows you to create higher end recipes, which grants you better weapons and farm tools. Which allows you to tackle higher level dungeons and be more efficient in your farm, which in turn gets you more money and thus expand your farm, with your expanded operation gaining more money and in turn, more rapidly and efficiently increasing a bunch of skills and thus equipping you to handle the harder dungeons, and get more drops to create the higher end equipment. And so on. No action is wasted in the game as they all contribute to making your stronger.

In GoA, you can literally ignore everything and just capture a bunch of bees and money will never be a problem. You can just also jump to the latest story dungeon, whack a few monsters to get materials (materials are also much much easier to get in this game), get the recipe literally handed to you in the same dungeon for no effort, and get a weapon that's objectively imbalanced and way too strong for that point in that game. A weapon that you probably won't even use because the Sacred Tools are actually even more busted.

In fact, being able to craft a recipe beyond your skill level is actually a nice crutch because failures still give exp (and thus contribute to closing the skill level gap) while allowing you to get a chance of making that item earlier than expected.

The other games to some extent maybe, but at least when I played 4, I did not at all feel the JRPG elements were simply "tacked on". Rather I thought all the differing elements were very well implemented and balanced between. Nothing felt like a waste to do since everything benefited from the other parts of the game. It also generally helps a lot to diversify the moment to moment gameplay and always give you something to do other than just wake up water crop gift wife go back to bed which is why I wasn't a huge fan when I tried to play SoS ToT
Frankly if the game was on 4's level I wouldn't even be that mad if they removed marriage since I just liked playing the fucking game. Opening one of my saves I was apparently on year 10 and had most skills at high level and most recipes and everything, then a bunch of tamed bosses and that one typhoon enemy
Speaking of typhoons, I had apparently saved a day before a typhoon hit, and when I walked out there was a nice little event with my wife Kiel and kid then some townspeople yes they were standing out in the middle of the typhoon but hey. My house was all decorated too.
GoA is good but it is just missing these kinds of things. It casualizes everything farming included to focus on the town building and socialization, which for the latter, I can't even confidently say is better than what we had before. You had town events like the above, could go on casual dates with the characters, their bedrooms would even update to reflect thems. Like if you go on a date with Dylas and buy him a fishing rod then he puts it in his room. You can inspect it while he's in the room and he'll tell you how he takes good care of it. He also writes a very tsundere diary and will yell at you if you try to read it while he's in the room. Or in general characters in your party will comment on story events. Fuck do I miss it

That coupled with the fact there's 4 of them, really hopes that RF6 just has a large handcrafted town like the previous games and a development area on the other side of it you can do whatever you want with. I also see them adding construction to the chemist/cooking/crafting/forging skill tree, which Tides actually had too I think.

I think it's probably the best system in the genre.

Sandrock also has a cute feature were characters start holding hands with when traveling close together once you start dating them, and better cheating reactivity what with needing to Solid Snake your way through town and dodge your other partners if you're on a date with one of the others, plus characters reacting differently to being cheated on, from being able to make up with a gift, to immediate break up.

People are overpraising it after how much 5 sucked. It does have a decent story and good waifus which are arguably the most important things in a RF game but it's pretty shit in almost every other way.
It's very short, there is not a lot of hidden dialog, or replay-ability. The crafting shit was already argued in other replies. You can't even bring companions along in town they just sort of fade in when you go to dungeons making it feel like they only exist to be battle monsters. They have a handful of quips they'll rotate between (you run out fast) a few of which depend upon specific pairs but I haven't seen anything based on location or related to a quest like 4 had.
General requests also don't have dialog or any kind of story you only get that through the characters events.

In the first few seconds of the song alone already sends multiple almonds in my noggin jumping. It was also the first time we had two proper main/female characters, and the OP animation cuts actually capitalized on that with lot of cuts and visual tricks shifting between Lest and Frey. The part in the chorus where Lest is running, the camera zooming to his legs, and then suddenly flipping out to show Frey running instead is my favourite part.

Kyle leaving to be a deadbeat during a stormy night while Aaron/Aria reach out for him is still one of strongest visuals in RF considering that you just played as this nice guy wifestealer for a good 10-15 hours. And suddenly you see him going out for a pack of smokes leaving his children behind. It's a jarring shock and hypes you up to play part 2 of what probably is the worst RF game gameplay wise. Still a pretty strong hook though.

And before you ask, no I didn't rewatch any of those OPs recently. I just remembered them after all this time because they're just really good OPs. Something GoA can't claim to have.

GoA isn't bad, but it's just okay. I like the characters, but there are none so strong that they'll live rent free in my head forever. I basically speedran the main quest so didn't have anyone other than my party members over bond level 2 so I would've barely been affect by that.
Skills are the only one that would've actually stung somewhat since i'd have to grind them back.
I knew I could cheat on the money but wanted to play it straight so I spent what I had, about 100K, still didn't really matter though since your money grows exponentially as your village expands. So after a week passed and I had progress further I had more money then started with. As far as I know there's nothing stopping you from just sleeping and printing money too, but I never even needed to do that.

Has the fable issue where the choice is a cool concept but money is trivial in this game so the only reason to sacrifice her is if you want to be a dick. I wouldn't mind having a game like this with some darker themes and consequences though.
