Tears of the Kingdom is the most impressive software ever created. You can debate about the nuances or if you think it's the best video game, but anyone saying it's not the most unbelievable software accomplishment ever made by humans is either lying, believing lies, or doesn't understand how programming works. I am a game programmer and this game blew my fucking mind. I can't even fathom how they made it. I'm dead serious it's crazy how much is going on and the level of polish and the fact that everything just works and it's not a buggy mess.

I don’t think I enjoyed even a minute of the maybe 12 hours I played totk. Just a fucking slog to play. No story, no motivation to do anything because Nintendo doesn’t even try make characters or real quests. I dicked around with the open world for a bit, but it’s was just botw again, but with annoying building mechanics that you can break by making OP shit. It just sucked all around. Still no fucking real dungeons. Just felt pointless so I dropped it after beating on the four “bosses.”

It's the best game on the list. The only reason it didn't win was just because people had played BotW before it and people for whatever the reason don't judge the games as if they were in a vacuum.
That said. BG3 was a worthy winner. It's kind of frustrating and to some degrees almost pathetic how Larian keeps fucking up the latter halves and final acts of their games. But ignoring that BG3 is genuinely impressive and a splendid game. And certainly way the fuck better than Lies of P, remakeslop, and the mistake that was FF16.

Tears of the Kingdom had no pizazz, no wow factor but the sky islands that wore off pretty quickly, and the spooks of the underground. Breath of the Wild innovated if you can call it that, and Tears just sorta spun its wheels and gave you largely the same exact map but with new things and encounters on top, with more gimmicks, and more resource management than before. Compared to Lies of P basically being a left field ace class in the Soulslike formula and Baldur's Gate 3 managing to be a surprise industry upset? Tears was effectively a brief fad that made plenty of money but had no lasting impact at all.

They design the entire game first and make sure it's fun to play before doing any of the story, adding the story and cutscenes is the very last stage of development. Yeah, the gacha machines in TOTK can be generally ignored, in fact the building mechanic can be mostly ignored. I was just playing through the game however I wanted, riding horses and shit and none of that stuff ever hindered me and I never had to even use the parts really. Anyway, no Zelda TOTK wasn't snubbed, its a good open world game but it has some serious issues and didn't have enough impressive new features to deserve another GOTY award.

BG3 is probably the most deserving GOTY winner in the entire TGA history.
Its a game that fires on all cylinders.
Every award show gave it to BG3 so its not like it was controversial, it was a unanimous and decisive win for the game.

BG3 > RE4R > TOTK

Nah TOTK is way more impressive in every conceivable way. There are effects in the game I haven't seen on any high end next gen PC games, like for instance a fog shader effect that seemed to perfectly react to Link's presence, I'm walking around and fog is literally moving around away from Link's body. No other game has the small details engineered so well, TOTK and its engineering accomplishments will be studied and copied for the next decade just as BOTW moved the ball forward
Something else nobody mentions, but really stood out to me, was the NPC and enemy AI in TOTK. Simply put the NPCs in the village acted like they had a mind of their own. I've never seen anything like this in any other game. You have to play TOTK to even experience this. As a game programmer, it was really amazing for me to test the NPCs and see how they act.

I played on release, i had exactly 1 crash and 2 minor visual bugs that were fixed by reloading.
And it was on August first week.

I did a replay after that in January next year when they added more stuff, i wanted to test the Dark Urge path, i even enjoyed it more than the first time, had 1 bug also in act 3 but as usual it was easily fixed.

Then i played it once more towards the end of 2024 with honor mode and one time more after patch 8. Had no bugs.

On release i did notice frame drops in act 3, it stuttered more because the city was bustling with crowd and my PC had 10th gen processor and a 3070 GPU so its not the best out there but generally the game runs smoothly for me for a CRPG.

I played many Crpgs, this is among the most polished (crazy i know) the whole genre is buggy and glitchy

For example some of your best action games are not that impressive, things like AC6 is highly overrated here, because it wasn't played by many people with proper experience in games.
AC6 for example is too easy, too shallow and lacks the From Software strong aspects like depth in level design and strong atmosphere.

Lies of P is a great game, but lets be honest, it relies on theft, its not actually original or inspired enough, a respectable game designer, or a game critic who has lived long enough to know their shit will never award games like this a GOTY.

Nioh 2 is somewhat similar but at least it diverts a little bit from the Souls ripoff formula, Nioh 2 was pretty good, it has a lot of bloat though, like itemization is annoying, level design is too basic, the rpg elements are just an afterthought.

No such thing as Anti-Asian when a lot of them get recognition, meanwhile Famitsu and Tokyo Award shows will give shovelware 40/40 and give actual good games 30/40 just because its not from Japan.
