Watch this video if you don't understand what the petition is about. It needs 400,000 more signatures.
Game companies kill 70 percent of online games:
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/70-of-games-with-online-requirements-are-doomed-according-to-stop-killing-games-survey
This law would fight the trend, and is basically a "right to repair" law that would require companies to put games into a playable state for customers one last time after they stop supporting them. This would make it easier for gamers to preserve video games, or to host private servers, or to play games over LAN. It'll be like in the good old 90s BEFORE ENSHITIFICATION.
Things aren't fine. Don't listen to the naysayers.

>>ARE YOU A SHILL? WHY ARE YOU HOLDING ME TO THE THINGS I SAID?
Why would anybody support such a dishonest movement? Especially when the goal is to hand control to government censors?
>>714024024Fake and obvious corporate backlash is actually pushing more people to sign now lol
>>714023450 (OP)You fuckers know what's coming if you vote for this petition right? You know the consequences of inviting the government to intervene in the video games, knowing full well and probably lived through the 90s to 2000s where it was full of paranoid and delusional old men trying to dictate the rules and censor the fuck out of everything right? This is going to be even worse than that because now you have those same old men who now see the monetary incentive to fuck shit up and you fuckers are straight up kicking and screaming to come save you.
This won't be the government salvation you guys are hoping for, this won't even be the corpo vs government clash either, this will come entirely at your expense. They WILL fuck your shit up, anyone that has been around long enough knows not to trust the government and it's appalling to me that none of you can see Ross as the glowie that he clearly is. Why else would he go to such lengths to push this shit and throw on a full mask under the guise of caring for destroyed games? Why else has there been such a massive outbreak of supposed ecelebs throwing their weight into this all of the sudden when the natural response was to veer as far away as possible from this clear glowie psy op? They know now that they can get some headway and they've been going into overdrive to push for this and you idiots are falling for it.
If there's any among you that still possesses a brain, I implore you to not sign this shit. Don't give it attention, don't give it any time of day. This shit has so many malicious layers to it that it would be wise to not interact with it at all, and to say nothing on the long term ramifications against the average consciousness should it go through. Do you really believe that you aren't throwing away your personal information for the government to "leak away" in a year's time when this is over?

Let's save some time and address all the shill/Jasonfag non-arguments ahead of time, shall we?
>"IT'S BAD TO LET THE GUBMINT INTERFERE WITH GAMES"
Governments have been directly interfering with the content of video games for decades with arbitrary censoring and other bullshit at the behest of moral busybodies, and corpos have been lobbying to try and make lootboxes not count as gambling for years as well. People who hate vidya or are anti-consumer have been using government as a tool to fuck over vidya, so how is it wrong for the consumers to petition the government to do something good for vidya for once?
>"IT'S TOO VAGUELY WORDED"
Vague is good, it allows negotiation of the finer points without forcing all publishers to do too much too quickly. On the central points of game preservation, the petition is perfectly clear.
>"IT'S GONNA FUCK OVER THE LITTLE DEVS"
Aside from the fact that this is aimed only at games which are judged to be non-profitable anyway, if you have the funds to publish a live service game, you should have the funds to account for an end of service plan, simple as. Nobody's making anyone create an always online game.
>"IT ONLY AFFECTS LIVE SERVICE GAMES"
Many single-player games are becoming always online in some capacity, both new and old.
>"B-B-BUT WHAT IF I PIRATE"
Denuvo plus tech aging out means that it will become harder and harder to play old games the way you once did.
>"B-B-B-BUT I DON'T CARE ABOUT THOSE GAMES"
Sooner or later it WILL affect a game that you do care about. Even if you quit vidya entirely, it's still wrong to allow it to happen to others.

>>714023450 (OP)My view on this is that this, and every other fight for pro-consumer laws, is basically a cop out.
Companies are spending almost billions per year lobbying the government for laws that support them and make it harder for new competitors to pop up. This directly allows them to pull more bullshit like for example making products that break more easily, since they have no competition. Stopping this seems impossible so we ask for pro-consumer laws instead.

This has probably been answered before, but why would this actually change anything?
I'd love for live service games to just kill themselves forever, but even in the best case scenario and the EU parliament puts through some regulations, why would that even change anything?
For example, I live in an EU country and there are clear laws regarding refunds, but that doesn't matter for Steam games because they just have you agree to cede those rights when buying their games.
Maybe I am really stupid and pessimistic, but I have seen so many of these kind of petitions over the 20 or so years I've spent on the internet.
>Movement intended to allow consumers the right to the thing they buy for life
>Insects crawling out the woodwork to defend multi billion dollar corpos
>Even resort to spamming gay porn, gore, and pizza to nuke threads
What causes such sickness of the soul?
Even IF the movement specified <Never turn off the server> It doesn't
It would kill shitty live service games or allow a spring for community servers. What is the downside?
>>714024081>Get a eula>Add my own clause that if I play the game, the publisher owns me 1 million dollars>NOOOO, NOT LIKE THAT, YOU CANT JUST ADD SHIT>Sorry, you should have read it, I did before I signed it, you own me a million dollars.Eulas are fucking bullshit and should have NEVER existed.
I can't sign the petition being American but I hope you Euro bros can manage it for all gamers.
>>714030794if this pass its a first step to killing live service slop for good
>>714030725>Finns would need something to do during winter besides sauna and alcoholism. That's plenty enough
I like the idea of SKG, however I have a question based on a situation that could reasonably happen.
Let's say an MMO reached end-of-life and the dev team released their server side files to the public. As with all MMO's, the game client's anti-cheat had been cracked for awhile. Someone decides to create an unofficial environment shortly after the end-of-life announcement. For example, see WoW's Warden anti-cheat being cracked on 1.12.1, 2.4.3, and 3.3.5a clients which allows for RCE (remote code execution).
After a year of good will, the project is transferred owners and the new owner decides to run the RCE exploit and phish hundreds of thousands player's browser cookies, passwords, and install malware on a mass scale. How will situations like this be prevented?
The average person isn't going to have the savvy to run things in a VM, nor even know what the hell I just typed. This is just 1 example of many I can think of.
>>714027658powerful mongol warrior blood
>>714030797Buying shills to come brigade this thread is probably more expensive than making games offline play compatible.
>>714030794Didn't refunds on Steam get added explicitly because of laws in one area? I don't remember if it was EU or Australia. The reason why we can now decline cookies on all websites is because of EU. It's not as simple as just ignoring the laws.
>>714030903I'd say that scam software and servers would be dealt with like any other scam software or servers with law enforcement.
>>714023450 (OP)>asks for name and addressSo what's there stopping me from signing up all my neighbors?
>>714030903simple, you put a warning message on the end of the game's life that says
WARNING: PLAY NOW AT YOUR OWN RISK
>>714030794It used to be that you couldn't refund Steam games, but then Australia sued and now you have a two hour of gameplay refund policy. I see this petition as the beginning and the first step toward making game preservation the law. Not everything will be saved, but we can build on this and save a lot more games.
What time on July 2nd is the hashtag thing starting again?
Is there a FAQ for that or something?
>>714031054So it's a ''don't let good be the enemy of perfect'' situation? That actually makes sense.
>>714030794worse case scenario, they may add an small note that if online game server is not operating for x amount of days, the consumers can ask for an refund, so dead games stay dead.
Best case scenario, all future games will have attached SDK files for when they end up getting sunseted by developer/publishers, so fans can just pick up the pieces and do whatever afterwards.
The realistic scenario is somewhere in the middle (closer to the gamedev site than gamers one).

>>714031604It's a start, anon. You can't give up because you can't reach the moon. Maybe walk up a fairly large hill first.
>>714030794You are being stupid. I don't remember was it EU or AUS which got into a scuffle with Valve about the refunds which resulted in Steam having to implement refunds. Also most recently EU forced Apple to adopt universal USB-C instead of their anti consumer retarded patent charger. EU is very good at regulating markets and very anal about consumer rights. For example in Finland Alcohol is taxed very heavily. So when people (legally so) buy alcohol cheaper online from other EU countries and bypass domestic taxation, the state tries to overrule the EU Free market laws and seize them in customs. When this happens or the state tries to push some anti free market law, rightfully so EU slams down and tells it would be a stupid move

Dude speedran his internet career. Up and coming youtuber straight to lolcow no inbetween.
Real talk, you actually know why the publisher doesn't like this!
I am AAA dev from switzerland, worked for a handfull of big studios, excusse my bad english.
There is a lot of money involved, as always and this should be no surprise to anyone here. For the publisher it boilds always down to money, but not in the way you would think.
As like with any other consumer goods, it is about the money for the shareholders. As more it can generate as bigger the income as more investments... you know the road this takes.
At one point, around 2000 the publisher noticed that predecessor IP's would damaged the income within an ongoing serie. They tried to find a way around this, testing the water with going full server based games.
If i remember correctley, it was need for speed doing it first.
They started a whole serie of NfS, shutting down each game as soon the next game was in the pipeline.
It did not really worked out, because the game wasn't fully on the server. It continued with slowely removing local multiplayer, loval singleplayer savefiles and got its biggest boost with matchmaking mechanism.
to cut it down, it is all about the money.
Keeping the development as cheap as possible, boosting only the promotion.
What actually will happened when the EU does something is the change of clarification on those products, you will no longer be able to buy it. What you will be presented with is a subscription model.
As soon this will happened, you will see games with a sub' option for 80 dollars, this is crazy and nobody will support this.
the shareholders know.
