Maybe its just because I'm bored but I've noticed a trend going back to the 2000's of trying to make characters from established childhood or iconic franchises more digestible to audiences varying from age or occupation. For example its not vidya related but Looney Tunes. They made Friends but Looney Tunes and surprisingly it was good. Why did they do this? Because sitcoms were popular when it was created and they needed a vehicle to market LT to aging audiences.

For games its the same concept. Remember when cartoon mascots wore biker outfits, did skater hand signs, wore sunglasses, striked a pose? Well thats not in anymore, now they have to do Dreamworks smiles, with an eyebrow raised and look as soft and inoffensive as possible. Because the kids of today aren't like the kids of tomorrow who were less infantilized and gravitated towards rebellion or counterculture ideals.

Ultimately you're gonna see Amy softened up, Sonic softened up a bit, hell you might even see it with other characters. Mario has no personality for this very reason but its been a thing since the 90's as does Mickey.

Unpopular opinion hut I hate Tyson's Sonic. Specifically his Classic Sonic. There's no edge to him. All projects that have followed his design (Mania Adventures, Superstars opening) are weaker due to his interpretation. If I were to compare it to a similar situation, it's how the TMNT was portrayed in the their initial years versus how the 1980s show is promoted today. Completed rounded off and made cute to appeal to a wider demographic. The image example is using the absolute best and worst interpretations to illustrate my point. I know Tyson has illustrated him with a a more menacing look before, but that is not the look everyone emulates. I also know the Toei episodes of TMNT was only 5 episode vs the hundreds of TMNT episodes, but the point is that TMNT's presentation in various projects at the time had much hardcore leaning interpretations (just look at all the Konami promo art).
