Steven Universe was an incredibly shitty show and I predicted this from the beginning. Rebecca Sugar is talented and she did a good job making "I remember you" which is Adventure Time's best episode, but Steven Universe was a big L. The only thing anybody remembers from Steven Universe is the "Stronger than you" song because YouTube autists made an undertale cover of it. The SU movie was really good though, unlike the show. They got a broadway actress to voice Spinel, who is probably the best character in SU. The only good thing from Steven Universe was Steven Universe the movie. Which had some weird covid undertones despite being released shortly before Covid, maybe it was just predictive programming. Lol.

It's such a woman show. It isn't like it doesn't have some good ideas, it even some good scenes, even if a lot of it is lifted from elsewhere. It's execution and writing though, it's so emotional and illogical and directionless. A man would never direct a show this way.

It kind of sucks because aside from how poorly it's animated and drawn there is a framework for good character drama that gets depleted because of poor worldbuilding, a lack of actual story and really confusing attempts at symbols and meaning.

I remember there used to be a cool steven universe mod for minecraft called 'KAGIC'. It wasn't just adding steven universe characters to the game though.

You could build your own injectors and cultivate your own gems to make your own little army. Rubies and Amethysts would fight for you, Peridot's could farm for you, Pearl's were essentially transportable chests. If you used injectors near water you could create Lapis Lazuli's and use them to fly. It was genuinely really cool.

The first couple seasons are really good and have great world building. They get the audience genuinely interested in gems as a species, you get to gradually learn about their weird culture and history. The homeworld gems actually feel like a threat. It creates this amazing feeling that steven and his friends are vulnerable and alone, struggling and fighting this long, loosing battle. The later seasons throw all this out of the water and lean so hard into the whole "power of friendship can save all!" shtick. The ending was such a let down.

I think Sugar had a good idea of the beginning and ending of the story. That's why the show had a great worldbulding and could manage to deliver a feeling that we're discovering something bigger. But you could only "discover" something for so long until it becomes the usual.
