Serious question. How do you make a character have or receive a disability in a videogame without it looking like pandering? Obviously the Khadgar wheelchair thing is retarded because he was literally vaporized and then just poofs back completely fine except is now just wheeling around in a purple chair. But there has to be a way where it can work naturally, and even be cool in a "battle scarred" kind of way.

Does anyone have any good examples of that?

If the nigga can magic himself a floating fucking wheelchair, he can magic himself to make it LOOK like he is walking. He could be floating just a centimeter off the ground, with his legs mimicking the action of walking. This is just begging for good boy points.
Losing a limb in a fantasy setting is an opportunity for a magical upgrade, not the time to whip out the handicap parking stickers

If the character is impaired in his movement then don't make him a physical fighter like professor x in X-Men. Otherwise disability works just fine. You are wrong on a mathematical level. I will write an equation and explain.

>to use wheelchair, Khadgar must conjure it (x), make it float (y).
>therefore, Khadgar must cast x + y constantly to use his wheelchair
>instead, khadgar can simply make himself float (y) and not conjure the wheelchair and maintain its mass and make its mass float at all, thus eliminating an entire step
>casting x is shorter than casting x + y

As you can see, mathematically it is easier for him to just float himself. Let alone even conjuring wheels on the fucking thing if he's flying around on it regardless. Wheelchair people must feel so patronized and insulted by this bullshit, it's akin to those token black characters in the 90s in every sitcom.

Don't make them disabled. Make them enabled. They are deficient, but their deficiency has heightened their power elsewhere- whether by unlocking something, by focusing them on a skill that others usually ignore, or by just being so powerful that they can afford that disability.
And don't make purple glowing wheelchairs. Wheelchairs are hardly practical IRL, even less in a setting with bad roads and levitation. It can be a floating chair, but then you don't need the wheels.

Integrate it with the character in a way. In one of my fantasies I have a mage type girl whose legs are so weak she can barely stand because she chooses to float everywhere and so never gets any use out of them, so walking and running on the bare ground would be comparable to making her seasick.

Once when I was doing some business in one of the worse districts of town, I got ambushed by this fat, black skinned trans woman in a real life combat wheelchair.
Despite the thing being made mostly out of wood, I would almost say that this thing has been a quite impressive feat of engineering, if it wasn't for the fact that it's an evil, disgusting, woke object that needs to be wiped off this earth.
Anyway, the tranny puled out a huge sword and charged at me with xis combat wheelchair. Luckily, since a combat wheelchair is super cumbersome and awkward, sidestepping the attack took me no effort and the imbecile charged right into a wall because xe couldn't stop xer wheelchair.
Then, after getting behind the combat wheelchair where the tranny couldn't hit me because turning a combat wheelchair is slower than I can move, with a mighty kick I sent the tranny and xis combat wheelchair to the floor, which actually took me all my strength because xe has so darn obese and heavy.
Lying defenseless and prone on the floor, like one of those prone crawler zombies, the troon grasped for xis sword, which was lying a few feet away from xim, but with a swift motion of my foot, I kicked the sword out of xis range.
I then prosceeded to stomp xis head into red paste.
I set the combat wheelchair on fire afterwards because I hate woke objects.
Combat wheelchairs just do not work in real life. They are retarded.

Interesting that the presupposition is that you HAVE to have a cripple in your video game.
>But there has to be a way where it can work naturally, and even be cool in a "battle scarred" kind of way
The game already had that, years and years ago, picrel is from 2007. But it's not a wheelchair so it's not obvious handicap in a way in which you can virtue signal when you insert it into your game, and that's the purpose of the Khadgar wheelchair.

The orc in the picture isn't any less dangerous or capable of disemboweling you, while the wheelchair is universally understood as pity worthy. So while one handicap isn't a virtue signal because it is part of the character's power level, the other is included solely because it's so obviously disempowering to the character, so whoever made the choice to put the character in a wheelchair can safely jack off to their moral superiority without being threatened by the possibility that not EVERYONE would see how good and moral and special they are.

When I see this shit it screams disability fetish, either people with the fetish of being disabled, like say that one furry who froze his hands off and had them replaced with paws or with the fetish of caring for the disabled. See muchausen and muchausen by proxy.

If you're going to be fetishy, you need to give no fucks and live with the consequenses.

You got the core right when you said "naturally", as it needs to fit the gameplay, the genre, the internal logic of the world.

They could've done the easy thing of literal hover chair, or have him stay in a safe location and project an image when needed.
They could've given him prothetics, either mechanical, or heavily enchanted to the point where it's veering into Cyberpunk territory.
Hell, Cyberpunk did it better in spite of how woke it is.
No, the real problem, is how lazy they have gotten. Blatant zoom ins to hide not animating legs, or how they don't know how to script them fighting.

You have two options when it comes to disabilities in games, and they're both inherently tied into character design having some kind of meaning. Ideally you should do both at once.
>Make it look cool
>Make it a gameplay mechanic
The latter is easily accomplished through shit like cybernetics, I admittedly have a weakness for robot arms with built-in weapons but it's an easy way to give the character extra mechanics. Legs, likewise, open up movement options depending on what you pick. Even a wheelchair can be used for interesting shit in a platformer; Sly 3 pulled it off.
The former is about style; floating purple wheelchair looks retarded. It should at least be something more imposing like a throne if it doesn't actually need to go over the ground. Alternatively you could permanently affix him to some kind of animal companion he has to ride, give him mechanical spider legs, give him tank treads, some kind of magitech exoskeleton to move his legs, or simply have him so hopped up on magical power he's constantly floating. All of these would look cooler than what they actually went with, and I came up with them in a few minutes, and I'm some retard on a Mongolian basket weaving forum.

Are cyberlegs a copout? Otherwise, an Ultramarine Dreadnaught (40k?) Baby Commando.(Capcom)
A litter carried by chained hot tauren bitches in bikiinis.

Riding on the back of a green fucking tiger like He Man.
Tensers floating disk (ADD), or better yet, the throne of the king of england on Tenser's floating disk, other thrones like one of skulls or the sword of thrones if appropriate.
Turning the bottom half of your body to a whirlwind like a genie. Transformation magic in general., (She is totally not a furry and insists I include that. ).

It's not a question of how you make it work so it doesn't look like it's a political statement. It's a political statement by its nature, it shouldn't be questioned or justified, it should be owned.

Is it just the size of the company (if 1 in X are disabled in the general population, your company has 12X employees), or do you specialize in something that requires wheelchair-bound employees? Or is it just a big coincidence (ex. recent accidents)?

by not pandering, obviously
it's not that complicated
if your writing at any point involves someone refusing a solution that the worlds lore has established, then you're a retard and should be fired
if at any point you write some dumb shit about disability being their identity or important to it, sacked, out the door
nobody would be disabled because you have made a setting which has the power to solve the problem and thus every instance exists because you have made them REFUSE to accept the easy solution available
make a fucking setting where solutions aren't available, or make them embrace the solutions. that's it, that's your only goddamn options if you aren't retarded and incompetent at writing
the incredibly obvious fucking unavoidable point however is that in settings, disabled people aren't going to be your main characters, they're not going to be fighting, they're severely fucking hindered and you cannot hand wave it away as a minor inconvenience. they would either accept the solutions to return to being competent - you cannot "make up" for severe disabilities to be on even footing with those not hindered - or they would be fucking strategists and desk guys, nothing more

Anyways, I thought that idea was cool and didn't feel like pandering. Early OW as a whole is probably a decent example of how to DEI max without it feeling like pandering, actually. The cast was specifically designed with diversity in mind, but the character designs were cool so people mostly didn't give a shit. you could also go with more of a low magic healing (maybe it speeds up natural healing processes or something) so you can heal from wounds that would otherwise take a month or more of taking it easy (think broken bones, large wounds) while not being able to regenerate limbs. that way you could have healers in a party or healing items but still make the world believable.
