You can choose to not do Maelle's quest in Act 3 and technically she would still be alive. As for her mother and father, it was his choice.

You're making it sound as if the gods are constantly pulling his strings. From what we've seen there are no strings on him. He was free to fuck off and do whatever he wanted for many years, with neither Renoir and likely Aline being aware of his whereabouts.

If you look at the scene when he reads the letter, he looks behind as if to make sure he was alone. He was often distrustful of others, and lying and deceiving became second nature to him. Lune read him right: he thought in false dichotomoies, he should have entrusted Maelle and the others in deciding how to end the conflict. In the end, he was mostly doing it for selfish reasons.

If all he wanted was out, he had multiple opportunities: He could've asked Renoir (the curator) to gommage him or not ran away with Alicia at the beginning of act iii, when Renoir was about to gommage him. Verso was doing what he was doing to try and save Aline from the canvas, and later Alicia. He lies to see it done, sure, but that doesn't make it selfish, just deceitful.
