indie doesn't mean new idea. It just means they had either 0 budget or very few people on the team. Every indie game is just a copy of something else but usually cheaper.

indies copying old established games while adding novelty is cool. cave story, binding of isaac, undertale, stardew valley,
it's the more recent influx of indie games that are just lazily rehashing successful indie games that are tiring. every indie game is some combination of roguelite deckbuilder metroidvania cozy bullshit now, I'm tired of those

I don't get why earthbound is so popular. I played it and it was fine but I think it is way over hyped.
