Game companies shouldn't be able to sell you a game they cut support for within the matter of years, months, or weeks or they should let the community take over by releasing tools so the community can maintain the servers. They shouldn't just steal your money from you.
Petition to make multiplayer games slightly less jewish rustles the jimmies of blizzard nepo baby who tries spreading misinfo to kill it. Whole community rallies again nepo baby. Petition now over two thirds of the way to 1 million signatures (or the amount needed for the EU governing body to give a shit). When someone says anything bad about SKG, just keep in mind that you're being taken for an idiot goy by devilish jews.

Okay! Imagine you have a super fun toy, like a video game you love to play. You bought it, so it’s yours, right? But one day, the people who made the toy say, "Sorry, you can’t play with it anymore!" They turn it off, even though you paid for it. That’s not fair, is it?The "Stop Killing Games" stuff is about people saying, "Hey, that’s not okay!" They’re trying to make sure that when you buy a game, you can keep playing it forever, even if the company that made it stops supporting it. They don’t want companies to "kill" games by shutting them down, especially if you need to connect to the internet to play them. They’re asking for rules to make sure games stay alive, like letting people run their own game servers or play without needing the company’s help. It’s like making sure your toy stays yours to play with, no matter what!

I like Ross but why is he such a little bitch? He’s always whining and complaining. Especially in that latest stream. “Guys I’m just SO exhausted guys I DONT HAVE THE TIME RIGHT NOW IM JUST SPENT IM SO EXHAUSTED THIS HAS TAKEN A LOT OUT OF ME” it’s like he’s describing the most difficult thing in the world when all it boils down to is typing emails to people and talking with organizers on a discord. He does the same shit when he’s talking about why his game dungeon is delayed for the 10th time. It can’t be THAT hard.
>>714131243
I'm an employee of a studio that runs a live service game. One of the difficulties following that fairly simple ask would be is the sheer complexity of the backend, and the shared architecture across multiple games. There are actual dozens of physical servers required for one player to play the game as intended, being able to move between areas and access their inventory. Even the dev-side stuff that lets you emulate and run locally is extremely limited.
Asking a game that runs like that to adjust to "just let me run it offline," is a fairly huge ask, and that's not saying anything about, "let me run a server so I can play with my friends."
I'm supportive of the initiative, but online games are fucking complex, aren't getting simpler, and the, "then make it fuckin simpler" approach is fairly unreasonable. Still, the objective of not letting what are essentially single or low scale multiplayer games die is worth all the messy complexity, especially because fuck Ubisoft in particular.

I'm not pretending that this would cost the developers nothing, but frankly, I don't give a shit. I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to ask that online only games don't eventually become unplayable. Better yet, why not STOP MAKING ONLINE ONLY GAMES REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

This form is "streamlined" by siloing and specializing tasks across devices suited for performing them at scale. If you wanted to simplify on a per player logical level, condensing things into fewer servers, those servers would be way less performant at any given task - meaning that you'd need more servers for the same amount of players, significantly increasing the cost of running the game as-is.
The proposed solution of 'just make it work' is tantamount to saying fuck any studio/dev who wants to make any games that are functionally MMOs. I don't like my employer either so I'm also fine with this, GDPR already makes our lives difficult, the EU is on the right track

The fun part is, you have no obligation to hand a functional server structure over to anyone. Only release the code so anyone motivated enough to do so, can. It's literally just putting your online-related code on github as a Public repo and going "no longer my problem".

So, multi-answer here. On a logical level, yeah containers are essentially 'the future' for running services, and those mean you're not really worried about the physical hardware that it's running on. But on the other hand, containers are relatively new in the technology space, not everything is running on them, and orchestration and management, as well as running the fleet backing it is still a relatively hard to acquire skill, personnel wise.
The other part is specialization - some stuff is written very specifically to take advantage of certain hardware capability, like running one database with the understanding that queries to it will be answered within a certain time threshold, while another one is non-blocking calls that could be run on spinners. Or certain processes needing high frequency CPU speed, while others just need core count.
>>714133731
That's the other part, say a critical part of your game's server functionality is shared across multiple games that you make - being required to throw that out there at end of life means that you've essentially compromised that particular part of some other game you still run.

Good answer, thanks. It seems to me like this is nothing insurmountable, and would likely improve game networking if more experienced and skilled people were brought in to develop the backend. Not dissimilar to how GDPR managed to improve data privacy, handling and security of services all over the world.
Worth also considering that if this goes through, it's likely to only happen in like 2028 or something and isn't going to be retroactive. I think that's more than enough time to adapt. Live services isn't going to disappear because it's just too profitable, so they'll keep being made, and the world will keep turning.

It's definitely not impossible to overcome, especially if you know you need to design for it from the get-go. It's just more of a challenge than I think the petition maker or lawmakers would really grasp, and there's a lot of room for tech-jargon to convince someone that it's an "unreasonable burden" or some legal nonsense and have some sort of exceptions put in for live service games that would let them dodge requirements.
>improve game networking if more experienced and skilled people were brought in to develop the backend
We (and I mean that to include the entire suite of people involved in live service) are really incompetent. Like getting skilled people and listening to them doesn't seem feasible.

Not only did you, you're yet again using all the same arguments. As it so turns out none of these things actually turn away publishers because the loss of the entire EU is actually a lot more substantial than just EU sales. Implementing offline modes or releasing a wrapper for a server SDK that has a readme that goes "Put your server IP here, put your port here, click 'run' and you're all set, make sure you have al ot of RAM for this" is literally not worth losing anywhere from a quarter to a third of your sales base over, and if someone is telling you it is - I got a bridge to sell you.

You being a mealy-mouthed faggot who spends more time on not actually elaborating on your contrarian non-points and going "Well no nuh uh nuh uh nuh uh!!!!" like an Indian child isn't doing anything other than embarrass you. If you think it's a guarantee they'll pull out, that explicitly means you believe that they see it as impossible from some standpoint or another. If you literally can't even take responsibility for your own words, then I can tell you right now that's a glaring sign you are in fact a streetshitter who doesn't believe in anything he's writing and is just making up contrarian disagreements for attention.

unironically if a company making some expensive game somehow doesn't consider this when releasing in a game in a EU it deserves to fail
It only applies to new games being made after it passes. And even then, games in development are probably exempt because it's too late to save them. It's meant to save games 5-10 years later down the line. All the current big MMOs don't have to do shit. So you have time to consider your backend server infrastructure and work with services that would make it EU compliant.
God forbid a company has to comply and work with a law to make sure their game is compliant and consumers are able to play it after they drop support.

Bug name RPGs with large worlds have no issue being played offline
What makes live service games so special that they cant just as easily package it up for offline mode?
The whole argument is retarded solely because we already have had offline only games that are as complex if not more complex then live service slop, online games with server owners not affiliated with the dev/publisher. The only thing tied to live service slop is microtransactions and is the sole reason publishers dont want SKG to be a thing

Anon, through just scraps of source code leaks and basic comments from the devs people have built entire new private server infrastructures for live service games far more complex than whatever your dev team has squatted out hot onto someone's plate likely using a very well documented very public engine like UE. Just off the top of my head:
>City of Heroes SCORE (Now like 6 new ones entirely)
>HorizonXI for FF11
>TurtleWoW
>PSO Ephinea
The people who can and want to run private servers are not people who are going to be daunted by "complexity." If two to three hobbyist autists can figure out mangled, leaked source code then an actually competent developer team would know what documentation to safely release without causing any headache.

Those hobbyists are probably more talented/passionate than the devs. GaaS/MMOs, as an industry, is filled with largely incompetent, burnt out husks. Your faith in big devs to actually have that shit documented is misplaced.

All of the games I listed are on custom, proprietary systems that have never had full source code leaks. Two of them are Japanese games from decades ago meaning their source codebases are so rich in spaghetti it looks like an Italian's large intestine. They predate modern API systems and GitHub and super-highspeed wired just a hair under terabit internet and had netcode that still uses the term "talk" for wireless connections. There were no standards of documentation or even syntax for these fucking aberrations. They are, undoubtedly, harder to turn offline or privatize.
Whatever live-service slop you're making is fundamentally less complex due to the abundance of documentation and publicly known third party materials meaning even a sub-techliterate retard would be able to redeploy based on the server code you provide. Hell I bet your backend doesn't even have a distinctly inhouse compiling tool, I bet that shit's by majority third party too, just with some basic relevant-to-the-game changes hacked on. And all of it is designed for new hires to grasp and work with within a week of starting. There is no excuse you could make here.

That also applies to the completely forgettable goyslop you're trying to save with this gay initiative, funny, isn't it? Those games certainly don't die because they were at its players peak.
Why does the game industry get to rely on bad coding practices?
At least with other fields, the problem is legacy code that refuses to die, not new problems caused by new stack development.

I'm not interested in what live service game you work on because the modern ones are all built on the same very narrow field of systems because they're affordable, rich in documentation, and have engineers who are paid on the clock to provide insight and support.
My point is there is nothing "complex" about whichever flavor of either mobile game, PUBG clone, or Overwatch clone you guys make that is too complex to privatize.
And it's bold of you to accuse me of appeal to authority when you opened with things like "there are actual dozens of physical servers required for one player to play the game as intended" which only works as an argument on people who don't know what the fuck a datacenter is. You guys do not have access to some secret proprietary alternative to AWS or Azure or Google Cloud. You're using one of the three - and that's not a slight against it, it's affordable and it works, but do not pretend that's somehow hard to release the source code for how your game interacts with it or dedicating two guys who mostly spend their time rotating rocks on maps to plugging numbers for where the game phones home for an offline version.
There is, as I said, no excuse you could make here.

>>714140596
Game dev engineering is basically chattel slavery. You get paid like shit regardless of quality of work. The guys who were doing technological marvels were usually making money elsewhere and just incidentally put their shit in game dev because they knew it on hand (The fast inverse square root in Quake's rendering was written by a guy who initially used it for a fluid dynamics simulation for a university that was paying him MUCH more money than Id would be paying him).

Most of the money goes into marketing, licensing, upper management, and PLURALITIES of low-skill workers. Why pay one really fucking good engineer good money when he's limited to the scheduling and ability of one man and you need this game out by Christmas? Hire 20 Forrest Gump-tier programmers that in total go at approximately 80% his minimum rate and you'll get the same amount of work done in half the time at the price of it being about a third the quality, and you can get away with that because video games are a consumer business meaning you can just tell the consumers to buy better hardware.

1 "true" libertarianism, effectively ancap freedom for everyone but no protections for said freedoms because those would inherently become authoritarian
2 authoritarian libertarian, i.e. your freedoms are so important they must be protected at all costs even if that means a police state

My job gives me access to a decently large database of people's names as well as their ID, which is all that's needed to sign afaik. Most of them elderly people that would never know their data is being used to stop killing games, and thanks to the outdated digital infrastructure of this country, it's likely that it'd be hard for the government to check if every signature is fake or spam. Or so I imagine.
I'm not gonna do what I'm implying here, I already signed and that's about as much as I'll do. I'm just curious what the actual practicality and consequences of it would be. Does the EU take their credential checking seriously for stuff like this? Would there be jail time or a fine for someone that did something like this? How easily can this system be exploited, if at all?

He's a retard. making stuff up. There's no such thing as a "random ID." Each EU country has their own IDs and their own databases of those. When you sign the petition and input it, it compares THE NAME GIVEN with the ID NUMBER. If those two don't match, you get an error.
So unless he, by some miracle, just so happened to make up a name + make up an ID AND both were valid AND the ID fit the person, he's just LARPing.

The guys who are doing technological marvels might end up in the gaming industry. But they will 100% of the time pull out if given the opportunity. The pay for a skilled programmer the likes you are describing, ones that make technological marvels, is infinitely higher in non game jobs. Not even comparable. Banking, engineering, take a pick. Its going to make you as much if not more money than a decently successful game. And you won't have to hope for a runaway hit.

It's a great starter point, I never played any Heroes games or M&M before either aside from Song of Conquest and maybe 2 hours of Heroes 5 with the 5.5 mod. I hear 7 has a mod now as well. 4 is apparently decent. Sseth's videos are unironically pretty good for all this.
Some notes:
>Get Heroes 3 Defintiive/Complete/Whatever its called on GOG, NOT THE HD edition on Steam (HD does not have the two expansions or the map packs expansions (heroes chronicles), not moddable either, not fixable.
>Go get it on GOG or pirate it and download the Horn of the Abyss mod as well.
>If you wanna play campaign vanilla (not the Abyss mod campaigns, which are way harder and kinda sweaty, I believe), you need to download the campaign files and dump them in your maps folder, I think. The ones on some sites might be out of order by name if you load them in game, so you might end up playing some late-expansion mission first and get your ass kicked like I did despite it being labeled as "1." or whatever.
https://www.moddb.com/games/heroes-of-might-and-magic-3/downloads/heroes-of-might-and-magic-iii-campaign-files-corrected-naming
^I uploaded the correctly-named files on moddb since the one already on there is wrong. Heroes 3 works very well, holds up perfectly with the QoL fixes from the HD mod (which was rolled into the Horn of the Abyss mod, again, one click install on GOG). Would recommend. Solid strategy game.

In this Concord scenario, would people still be refunded for paying for the game? Or is it game over because it's still somewhat playable thanks to SKG?

on the contrary, only megacorporations would suffer almost zero impact from increased game development and legal compliance testing measures because they can simply eat the cost or use an army of lawyers to bypass requirements
it's amazing to me that you don't understand this already, the only thing increased EU regulation ever does is hurt little guys and make it easier for megacorps to increase their market share
