Most people here think all these religious and moral measures in places like Louisiana and Texas are ridiculous, and I'm perfectly sure they're pretty contentious topics there too. Just that the ordained political class in those states happens to come from backgrounds that support those kinds of policy.
A lot of these people only have the choice between a Bible thumper Republican who believes in most of the same things they do, plus a few awkward things they aren't perfectly happy with, or a Democrat who believes in none of the things they do, plus a lot of things they find morally reprehensible.
In the South, a lot of people are forced to choose between a fundamentalist fuckface they're not perfectly happy with and someone who hates them for their moral beliefs, with no in between. Of course they're always going to choose the one who lets them keep living their lives normally, for the most part.
