Al-Gharbi has a chapter entirely dedicated to this. I didn’t realise that they had a scene where it was essentially a modern american teenager and her mother, at what looks like a fantasy version of a modern American house, have a very modern American sounding chat about it while the mother brings up the word that already exists in their culture for non-gender conforming people. I mean having non-binary characters is completely fine, but make it fit in a pre-modern fantasy setting because historical societies had many things going on concerning that, it’s extremely lazy to make a fantasy setting and it’s just modern America without electricity. There were many ‘non-binary’ gender identities in the past, but having a character use a distinctly modern way of identifying as such is so incredibly lazy because that comes with a lot of baggage, context and history that simply wouldn’t exist in such a setting without good reason. It’s taking the modern perspective on things for granted
