You need to stop thinking in modern terms. Old games did not have things like textures and audio files. Itโ€™s literally just pure code.

There just isn't much data in the game. The code is very simple, the sound is just telling the sound chip to make a series of waves, and there's probably only a couple of dozen sprites in the entire game.

I keep imagining if a modern AAA game could hypothetically be designed from assembly, just how small it would be. If something like Super Mario Odyssey got recreated from the ground up, just what would the filesize be? I have to imagine that it would be like cutting the lawn of a very large field using a pair of small nail clippers.

I'm too lazy to do more research on the NES but 40 kiB is 40 * 1024 bytes = 40960 bytes
I think one instruction took 1-3 bytes (1 byte opcode + 0-2 bytes operands) on its ancient 8 bit cpu, which means you can have about 13653-40960 instructions

the gameplay logic and the graphics are very simple
it's possible if you have zero bloat, i.e. you don't use modern #coder memes like importing a library just to test if a number is even

We went from underpowered consoles holding gayming back to overpowered PC holding gayming back.
But I don't get why devs chase bleeding edge so badly. If you look steam hardware survey. Wast majority of people don't have hardware. Consoles are held back by storage space. Regular ps5 has less than 800gb. Xbox has 1tb. No idea how much usable.
Yet new games are massive and need modern hardware. FF7 rebirth needs DX12 Ultimate. This means you can't run it on anything under nvidia 2000 and amd 6000 series. Nvidia 1000 series is still most used series of cards in steam hardware survey. 3000 series is second most popular with 3060 being overall most popular.
Games like doom dark ages and ff7 rebirth have ditched big chunk of playerbase to chase after bleeding edge and they don't look better than last generation games.

theres too many reasons why games are shit to just point at the customer. sure, if everyone wised up overnight and refused to get ripped off they could probably force some change. but games are shit because theyre being rushed out on to as many platforms as possible, untested, chopped up into dlc and drip fed content updates to jerk off investors and advertisement agencies instead of jerking off the people who actually buy the games.
its not like people need luxury hardware to be stupid with their money. theres shitty little smart phone games pulling in truckloads of money by being straight up casinos, and merchandise sales usually dwarf game sales, so sometimes you end up with things like messy pokemon games.
if games are to be good they have to be made by people who give a shit about making a good or fun game and have the time and talent to actually do it. that was always uncommon.

Except hardware and graphics have stagnated. Prices are higher than ever. People aren't forking out money like they did in 2010s. But it's up to devs where do they draw the line.
Funnily enough Activision is going to other direction. Next cod game will come out to last gen consoles too.

>284 bytes for 16x32 = 512 pixels
it seems that the NES used a tile based system and pre-defined palettes.
Tiles were either 8x8 or 8x16 pixels large.
Each tile needed 2 bits for the color of each pixel plus 4 bytes of metadata (palette choice, etc.).
A mario sprite would need 4 big tiles.
So I'm guessing (4*8*16*2) / 8 + 4 * 4 = 144 bytes.

That's rotational velocidense recording, it's only one type of recording. You also have digitalized stairstep-based recording and "hopping in Jake White's audio polaroid booth"

Maybe in terms of scale when compared to the gigabytes we deal with today, but 238KB would be displayed as 238KB or 0.2MB if going by your logic.
