Zoomers ran this one into the ground in record time

I don't get it, why pretend to be nostalgic for something you haven't lived through, why try to impose your own ideas of what it was like on the people who did

If the oldest zoomers were ~5 years old when the trend started dying out, I wouldn't say their experience with the trend at 2, 3, 4 years old was meaningful enough to stake a claim on it

They would have been playing it through the mid to late 00s after those games came out, which means they can lay claim to having lived through the trend. Unlike today, trends back then didn't get old in a matter of months.

>Frutiger Aero (also known as Web 2.0 Gloss) is a design aesthetic that spanned from roughly late 2004 to 2013 and peaked around 2007 to 2012
https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Frutiger_Aero

How the fuck was it 'dying out' when zoomers were kids? It was a major feature the whole time. This very thread is posting games mostly from the PS2, which didn't really stop being everyone's main console until 2009 when the PS3 finally got some good games.

I would say it's the opposite, 9/11 turned the American zeitgeist on its head and the decade that started with colorful and whimsical mascot platformers ended with countless brown modern military shooters, whereas smartphones and mass adoption of the internet turned trends into eternal stagnating sludge and now even stuff from the early 2010s feels relevant today

There's an incredible difference in culture between the hopeful optimistic early 00s and the jaded and cynical late 00s, music like Sum 41, NSYNC, Britney Spears feels like it's from a different dimension compared to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Coldplay etc, meanwhile the most popular cartoons in 2025 are Adventure Time, Gumball, Phineas and Ferb, all stuff from the 2010s, and shows like Regular Show and Steven Universe are getting revivals as well

I would prefer if the period remained an authentic memory of the people who lived through it rather than being mangled into a generic consumerist trend to be packaged and sold to people that either didn't live through it or weren't old enough to remember it, like Stranger Things is for the 80s

It's like living in a comfy sea side town and wanting it to stay that way instead of being turned into a busy soulless tourist attraction

Including hardware then being finally marginally capable of specular highlights, dynamic shadows, and sunshafts. Tropic locale was just the perfect setting to play with. Open terrain, fewer needed textures, simplified models(i.e huts).

It's still a thing. This has never not been a appealing aesthetic to people. A tropical beach being the ideal destination for relaxation predates most popculture. Of course you're going to see it in video games.

Looks more like what people think the 80's looks like compared to reality. Checker pattern and those neon colours weren't 90's. A "90's" style room would have mixed dark metallic colours, plastic and fabric. For one there's no blow up furniture which was big in the 90's.

No, you have that backward. There are SO MANY trends on the internet, atomized into little pockets of people who happen to follow certain things on various platforms, and it all moves SO FAST that old things still feel relevant due to a complete lack of stability in how trends work due to social media and streaming platforms.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "impose your own idea on the poeple who did" but I'm not even sure it's "nostalgia" we're talking about. Things can resonate with people in some manner without a direct experience, but even then, as the world has gone one things which zoomers have grown up with, seen and experienced, align a lot more with what once was than what is now, we are in decline.
I find it gayer to make "nostalgia" a thing of gatekeeping, or gatekeeping enjoying old things FAR, FAR, gayer than whatever you are talking about, but then again, I don't know what you're talking about.

You DO realize that experiencing something outside of its zeitgeist doesn't make you an authority on the zeitgeist itself, or allow you to make claims about what the time was like

It's no different than the underage retards who see 50s/60s nostalgia and start making claims like "ackshually no one was happy back then it was all cope they were all on drugs and beating their wives and etc", I'm not saying that was or wasn't the case, I'm saying I don't want to hear someone who wasn't alive back then making claims about the period unless they can be verified as an unbiased historian expert

I was born in 87 and that top room screams 1988-89 yuppie. 90's early neon was pink, green, yellow and orange plus a lot of primary red, yellow, and blue. The back wall has pastels on it which is 100% 80s and not 90's. It even has an arcade machine when a 90's room should have console as that was the decade when everyone was throwing out a gaming console to try and cut in on Nintendo and SEGA's owning of the market. An early 90's room would have the colours in this image.

Yeah I never said that, nor implied that, WHATSOEVER.
>or allow you to make claims about what the time was like
Not based on direct experience, no, but knowledge can be derived from more than just direct expereince. I don't need direct experience of a thing to know it was a Hell of a lot better, or to yearn for it.
I totally agree and see where you are coming from there, but I think people like that are literally just inventing copes to pretend the past wasn't leagues ahead of modernity. That's a whole other issue.

People forget theres a disconnect and lag between "media popular" and "shit that was actually popular"
TV and advertising was always behind the times, usually only catching up after everybody's moved on to some other new fad, often highly exaggerated and coming off as lame and forced.

Still is to this day too which is funny.

In this specific case the problem is zoomers reducing the entire era to "water and frutiger aero" and filling every thread or mention of the era with nothing but that, overwriting the actual nostalgia, when 00s summer threads on /v/ used to have a variety of zeitgiest appropriate games and aesthetics, anons reminiscing about the times, posting ads, promos, shows, music etc that remind them of the era, having intimate and direct insights about the era and so on

It was unthinkable to post Far Cry 3 or some bland indie game in these threads up until ~2020, but completely understandable to post Jet Set Radio or Pikmin even though on the surface they have nothing in common with the "beach era"

It was pre-global warming times.
White people working on those games in gray cubicles in AC-controlled offices in temperate climate countries dreamt about living in tropical paradises.
Until it started getting hot and they discovered living in such conditions isn't so great after all.

I don't think we called it anything. It was just seen as "sustainable futurism." If that makes sense. I see the appeal now but at the time I thought it was cheesey corporate art because it was everywhere. Zoomers kept the good aspects of the aesthetic just like we kept the cool stuff from 80s futurism.

Halo CE's version of The Silent Cartographer was so ass, the thing that made the original mission so cool was being able to look out across the water and -not be able to see where the ocean ends-, and just take in the sheer sense of scale that implies, to be on an artificial ring world that's so massive that it's possible to have a proper ocean on it that's big enough to vanish over the "horizon". Adding a bunch of islands and clouds in the distance for detail just ruins it.

Why the fuck would I not 100% a game I paid money for? I want to see everything the guys at Nintendo put together for their lunchbox console, both the good AND the bad, so I can judge for myself if the game is any good. What, do you think if I just pretend the 240+ blue coins, the timed red coin missions, the lilypad and pachinko machine levels, the slow ass board ride TO said lilypad level, the watermelon festival, yoshi being hydrophobic and on a timer, the nothingburger jpg you get for actually completing the game (something you're telling me I shouldn't do, mind you.) If you have to "ignore" multiple aspects of your so-called "kino" then it's not kino. It's a 7/10 at most, and only cubebabbies would pretend it's anything more.

There's a reason that 100% completion is not required for beating the game. If you find a particular challenge/level annoying and not fun, just skip it and move on. Why torture yourself with optional content you're not even enjoying? Someone else might like a level that you hate, which is the point of having all that variety and then letting you pick which 70% or whatever you actually want to do on your way to the end of the game.

The game looks "okay" it's a paradise world made by someone who isn't allowed to have any new ideas. The aspect that kills the game is the writing. Everyone in the game sounds like they're on anti-depressants (and I remember a character literally is.) The H.R. department seems to have a gun to the writer's head, and if anyone says anything that's not fake-smile-happy they get they brains blown out. I played it for 30 minutes and uninstalled it because the game was more propaganda than game.

What I finding interdasting is the focus on game biomes/environments that heavily exclude colours the human eye is actually good at seeing. Now while some elements of why are obvious (i.e computationally expensive) one element I suspect curbing things is how most people are using screens that can't do colours well. Note no screen technology i'm away of can do the full spectrum anyway (and without fucking around attempting to do so with RGB would put a whole shitload of red outside perception range). We these beaches and oceans but you'd think forests and fields would be a greater focus.

An artist must first experience life to then encapsulate it. That's what all great artists advise. The devs from back then most definitely vacationed in Okinawa, and knew what a tropical beach looked like and the feelings it evoked. Devs now are either urbanite Californians, stuck in a smog ridden shithole, or outsourced Indians, also stuck in a smog ridden shithole, but somehow extremely worse.

Yes actually. When the gamecube debuted it was only $200 compared to the switch 2 which is $450. Alot of things besides games have went up. Also, before smartphones and the popularity of the internet, meeting people was more natural and you could make a proper connection. Its really bizzare and uncanny how things have changed in the past 25 years. Then again, you probably werent born in the late 80s/early 90s to experience any of it so it makes sense why you want to ask such a redundant question.

Because they have no identities of their own. All their "meaning" in life is derived from internet consensus--not opinions that they arrive to on their own, mind you--but things that are dictated to them through group consensus and "algorithms." Think reddit upvotes and popular repeating things like the OP sentiment.

TLDR zoomoids have no identity of their own thanks to the sterilized digital world they grew up in, so they have to pretend to feel nostalgic for things they never experienced, because it's a the closest they'll ever come to finding meaning in their lives.

sort of like how every graphics overhaul mod from the early 10s would make the world look like a janitor freshly mopped every floor so they could show off the lighting and reflections.

As a millenial I can kind of understand the "you kids just wouldn't get it" idea. Zoomers aren't going to ever get the same experience we did.
But I don't hold it against them for going back to the things we enjoyed in the moment.
And at the same time, most of my favorite movies, music, books, artworks, and so on came out decades or even centuries before I was born.
The tension only comes from the fact that millenials remember living through and are nostalgic for what younger generations are actively interested in and seeking out in the same way I listened to old 80's rock or watched Schwarzenegger movies.

Splatoon is the current best series carrying the Frutiger Areo torch btw.
Half the aesthetic is just a Japanese artistic sensibility btw.

I went to a place in Turkey with my family for most summers when I was a kid (my dads wife was Turkish). The place we always went was a seaside place but it wasn't touristy at all, I was very nice, some natural hotsprings up in the mountains near by too I'm not sure we would've found it if not for his wife we never once met anyone there who was also a tourist.

Here is why
Most of this push came from japan
Japan was MacOS land from the end of the MSX popularity until the middle of the PS3 era
Apple rolled out the AQUA design language on the first Mac OS X, and devs had to use this UI for years till Apple retired it when the Intel Macs started to come out in the late 2000s
This UI influenced the vibe and feel of many early 2000s games and graphic design in general.

It's amazing how zoomer faggots will always find a way to suck corporate cock and support everything they do even though modern super corps are the most ruthlessly greedy they've ever been in history.
Literally had a zoomer passionately lecture me about how mods are heckin evil and should be illegal because they deny corpos potential theoretical profit that could be made from DLC and micro-transactions. They'd be the ultimate slaves if they weren't to lazy and incompetent to actually do work.

I'm glad other zoomies grew up with or are looking back fondly on something I enjoyed. I don't know why that makes some of you faggots seethe so much, it's way better than ignorant tiktok kids dismissing everything from the past.

A zoomer born in 2000 lived a completely different childhood compared to a zoomer born in 2010 yet the absolute mongoloids that plague /v/ think they are the same. The whole concept of generations is so fucking retarded its insane.

And only 1/3 of the games posted actually reflect that aesthetic of that era, courtesy of zoomers who think having any water whatsoever qualifies a game to be part of the era's aesthetic

Millennials online are so unbearable it's insane. It's like their entire identity has been constructed by whatever was on their TV or game system when they were a kid. This is why it's such an affront to them when you tell them you share an experience with them, it's like their goysumer personality is being exposed as just what it is, media consumption, leaving them with nothing else. They didn't even create the fucking media, that's what's even funnier, the only thing they create are $22.99 burger restaurants and artisanal bowties and shit

Why do millennials act like the second something comes out it just vanishes from existence? They act like you can't just buy used games, used clothes, hand-me-downs, garage sales, I watched my brother play this game now I'm playing it, etc. Imagine if some eight year old kid said his favorite game was breath of the wild and I snapped and freaked out at him and called him a liar. That would be crazy but a lot less insane than thinking zoomers never have experienced "frutiger aero" or whatever the fuck you want to call it any form like a video game or piece of media

It doesn't vanish but the contemporary feelings will probably not be felt by later generations(it's possible to feel them but unlikely). Some things that were really cool aren't timeless and the idea that games don't age that some people peddle is total nonsense.
Just simple environmental factors matter a lot, zoomers have been on the internet for basically their entire lives so they have like.. billions of impressions pounded into their brains whereas us old timers were entering 3D worlds fresh when they were brand new things -- new worlds to explore and figure out the fundamentals of. I remember when basically every single game played differently with totally different controls and that definitely made the "new game" experience that much more stimulating for us. Whereas zoomers probably just think it's retarded how badly games control(as I do as well, in retrospect).
