also, somebody should remake the sh1 section of this because it's terrible and always has been, pgxp shouldn't be used with sh1 because team silent was already working around the lack of z buffer as was, since it's a late gen game, ergo pgxp breaks more than it fixes unlike some other games
in addition the ui for duckstation's different now, and there's other changes it should recommend like putting duckstation in a folder like c:\games and having the iso in a similarly accessible folder like c:\games\duckstation\roms, or enabling the cache entire iso in ram option enabled
in addition it should recommend basic tweaks like at the very least 4x read, 4x seek, and depending on user hardware some amount of runahead (silent hill has iirc 8 frames of input latency by default during gameplay and 4 frames during menus, so 4 frame runahead is ideal but that's a massive performance requirement increase and the secondaries that need a guide like this prob don't have the hardware for that, but at the very least 1 frame runahead is reasonable and still a decent improvement for the feel of the game)

epsxe should also never be rec'd for sh1 as it's inherently prone to breaking

>pgxp shouldn't be used with sh1 because team silent was already working around the lack of z buffer
It's not about the Z-buffer, but the lack of sub-pixel accuracy in the vertex coordinates.

In short, the polygonal corners ALWAYS jump between a set of fixed points on a grid of 320x240 locations, no matter your resolution.
This results the famous polygonal wobbling, the reason for those ancient "Cherul...." memes.
Higher res = more notable this warping becomes.

PGXP also helps with the TEXTURES, as the PS1 also lacked perspective-correction. So that's TWO different sort of common warping artifacts, fixed with one stone.

If you instead prefer "muh native, authentic experience", just stick to 4:3 240p with no enhancements.

>ergo pgxp breaks more than it fixes unlike some other games
It really does not. The ONLY part that truly "breaks" is the Balkan Church entrance scene, which can be fixed by ticking off the circled setting shown in the guide.

>the ui for duckstation's different now
It really isn't that much different yet.
Are you using the right EXE? You do know that the DS ships with three different configurations?

>there's other changes it should recommend like putting duckstation in a folder like c:\games and having the iso in a similarly accessible folder like c:\games\duckstation\roms
First of all... just why?
Second, why the hell are you putting shit into your C drive??

You act like you'd be some 1337 haXX0r, but you also sound like you're playing on a single-drive netbook from 2009.
Not to mention you can indeed set / automatically detect the games folder, after which DS lists all available ISOs on the startup screen.

>in addition it should recommend basic tweaks like at the very least 4x read, 4x seek,
Autistic ADHD fags should just stop playing games.

>epsxe should also never be rec'd for sh1 as it's inherently prone to breaking
I've literally used ePSXe for like 25 years now. It works fine, but is old.
DS' is a huge real upgrade.

pgxp will regularly make higher up meshes render in front of lower meshes
windows doesn't allow apps full access to anything in default folders, so having a folder for installs directly on c: like c:\apps c:\games etc. is always recommended for 3rd party apps
duckstation can on some setups break mid execution if it runs in to a scope/permission issue while running, ergo having the iso itself in an accessible folder, or enabling cache entire iso in ram should always be recommended (this is built right in to duckstation for that reason)
epsxe breaks with sh1 this is well known
idk why you typed all that up when everything i said is basic knowledge of best practices, you're a moron

>pgxp will regularly make higher up meshes render in front of lower meshes
Untrue.

>windows doesn't allow apps full access to anything in default folders
Everyone knows this.
You still didn't explain why anyone but a literal nufag would need this info, OR why are you putting shit on C:/?

>epsxe breaks with sh1 this is well known
No, it really is not well know.

Like said: I used ePSXe for DECADES.
I've beaten SH1 more times on that thing than I've played it on a real Playstation.

>idk why you typed all that up when everything i said is basic knowledge
Yeah, right back at you.
The guide's purpose is to provide link and basic setup info for these games alone. If you can download the games and emus, you SHOULD know that jazz already.

And you're still avoiding the questions.
