Is there a point to the rifle? You'd think you should use it on bosses, but they are in very confined rooms so you end up just trading blows since the rifle is so slow and awkward to use. The shotgun packs a punch and it's much more mobile.

kek itz hilarious how this unironically destroys the entire game. unironically would have been one of my favourite stories ever if reddit didnt ruin it for me by defending the s
retarded "well actually my wife died like 3 days ago and laura is real and that totally makes sense cuz im a retard that has to validate the game at every turn"
so fucking sad, the game overall isnt even that well written, and I HAVE to imagine that different people wrote angela and eddie or whatever his name is.
But mary is one of the most human characters ever written (atleast in my modern conception). And something I wanted to cherish because of how rare it is.

I think all this timeline stuff was hammered out after 1-4 were made because the guidebooks for 2 say they thought the game took place in the 70s or 80s with a loose timeline, while nothing indicates Sh1 takes place before 2. 2 is also replite with endless anecdotes of various catastrophies, including multiple incidents of entire peoples just vanishing which seems to hint this kind of catastrophes keep happening.

Lot of hints the lake is somehow involved as well.

Could be something as simple the town and lake have just witnesses so much death and misery it left an impression on the area. Maybe it was a spirital place by the natives, and they revered it, but the catastrophies tainted the spiritual energy to be dark and malicious.

>SH2 gameplay design is not very thought out.

It's copying the weapons of 1, but they made sense in 1 since bosses were in big arenas you could take shots at. Most of 2's bosses are fought in tiny rooms and you ahve no space to properly fire and reload so you end up trading blows. It "works", but it's not very smooth.

in contrast, the shotgun is just the best most useful weapon. It dishes out good damage and it's much more manouverable.

In my mind, as James is pulling up to the parking lot, Mary and Alessa are having a conversation on the hotel roof about whether James will make it all the way to her or not, then they make Maria together to both help and distract James. I can't help but think Maria is also a part of Mary, like theirs some of the real her in there.

>I can't help but think Maria is also a part of Mary, like theirs some of the real her in there.

Replaying the game and watching carefully, I think Maria is literally the revived mary, as in its actually her, but she's altered with James wish and delusions. That's why you can only get static of Mary trying to talk to James on the radio, but can't meet her. James has to overcome his delusions, and literally fight Maria to finally be able to meet Mary.

James could have met Mary in the park or anywhere else if he wasn't delusional. There is nothing special about the hotel per se. It was all a journey for James to see the truth. If he had persisted in delusions, well that's the Maria ending. That's another hellscape and a half.

Mary, being a woman who just died and was deathly sick in life, can't persist and simply dies again, but she at least got to talk to James, to give him some hope and to get some closure. So there's a good ending if you get Leave.

I recently found out that there were a lot of fans who complained about 2 on release because it wasn’t like 1, and that it was “too psychological” (and I assume they mean less scary as well). They were gonna make 3 the same as 2 with a bunch of pathetic retard characters in their own nightmare delusion but pivoted to the sequel to 1 thing.
Honestly, based fans. 2 is the worst of the three and I’m glad 3 wasn’t the same shit as it.

2 makes a bit deal to show you that this shit has been going on since native american times. I think the future of the series should have been setting games in the past.

Makes me feel not even human, like i cant find stories interesting or something. But its just the style of narrative that doesn’t do it for me

You’re not alone I don’t like stories that hinge upon a single big plot twist either. Especially when the entire rest of the story is just lame foreshadowing for that twist. I liked the other games better, the cult story was cool and scarier.

>They were gonna make 3 the same as 2 with a bunch of pathetic retard characters in their own nightmare delusion but pivoted to the sequel to 1 thing.

All I've heard is that the original idea for 3 was too much even for Konami to handle. My guess is that ti's about a runwaway teenager who's pregnant as that is what 3 is strongly hintin about. Fans of 1 wanted real answers in Japan sicne they found the story confusing, so they made 3 a direct sequel.

>I recently found out that there were a lot of fans who complained about 2 on release because it wasn’t like 1, and that it was “too psychological” (and I assume they mean less scary as well).

I like 2, and it's a max comfy game, but you pretty much coudln't design an opening segment that is both confusing and alienates players. It's a lot of long running sequences, a confusing apartment complex, and it takes like 30-45 minutes to get all the tools (map, radio, flashlight, handgun) to really start playing the game.

Compare that to 1, where you get all your tools in the diner within 5-15 minutes of booting it up.

2 is literally "it gets good 2 hours in". I don't feel it picks up until you get the Psych ward. The pipe is a solid melee weapon as well, and a big upgrade from the board.

Looking at 2 from an outsider perspective, the wooden plank is a pathetic starting weapon and totally not fun to use.

>James could have met Mary in the park or anywhere else if he wasn't delusional.
He would never meet Mary anywhere because subconsciously he WANTED to be punished and the town obliged by putting him on a spooky town ride where everything wants to shit into his pants and kill him with constant allusions to Mary's suffering.

2 has improved controls and graphics, and it's nic to run around. But the enmies are slow shambling zomies (for lack of a better word) and a big downgrade fro mthe entire zoo of manic rabid animals that want to kill you in 1. You also experience about half the entire town segments as you do in 1. I want to say that 1 has about 4 big open town segments to explore, but 2 has only 2.

What's worse is that 3 has almost NO town segments and it's just a giant on rails set of dungeons. But it does have way more enemies and the world feels more populated so there's that. You also teleport around a LOT in that game.

I fully believe for instance that with the time, you'd have this long run from the Lakeside Amusement park to the church the Order was using. In the game you just zap teleport to it.

The shotgun and rifle in 1 both shoot a lot faster. But you only really need them for boss fights because you'll likely have a ton of pistol ammo and the hammer for other enemies.
But really I think the best gameplay design goes to 3, it had the best melee, very threatening enemies, didn't shower you in ammo, and good puzzles.

3 starts strong but you can literally see the budget slipping away as you play it. Oh wow, the 2nd to last boss is... heather. Just heather. No clue why. just heather. Oh nice. The first boss is very intricate and well designed, and then the 2nd to last boss is retextured heather. The final boss feels like it's totally incomplete as well.

1 and 3 both have better enemy design.
You know 3 might not have many big open areas, but it does have areas that emulate the feeling of running from enemies in those big open areas like you would in 1, so they both have dangerous oppressive enemy encounters that you have to fight or flight from.
Even 2's big open area just has those slow motherfuckers that you just run around.

>As opposed to 2 that has like three bosses that all play and even look exactly the same?

You fight PH twice, but both fights are different. One is very close and the second in a wide arena and they ahve spears. There's Abstract daddy in a tight room. Then there's those patients who come from the ceiling.

Maria fights totally different, in the ONE giant open arena in the entire game.

So there's only a handful of bosses (like half of 1) and they're mostly in tight cramped spaces. You can just sit in a corner and shotgun them.

NO, I get the in-universe "memory of alessa" thing, but it's obviously just an excuse of a rushed game development and they needed another boss so they retextured heather.

A better fight would be the actual Alessa with unique animations and weapons rather than just retextured heather.

I don’t really like 2’s boss fights. The first pyramid head can just be avoided until he leaves. Abstract daddy is just a regular enemy. The floating patients and floating Mary are too silly. Dual pyramid head was cool though mostly because of the storytelling aspect.
