Most live service games aren't worth playing without consistent company support anyway. Games with any degree of protection from cheating and hacks would no longer receive that protection. PvP games would suffer and die out due to rampant cheating, with the only active players left being obsessed weirdos.

Gacha games are practically worthless without support as well. The moment a gacha goes EoS, it immediately loses all value. Doesn't matter if it can be downloaded and played offline, it's worthless.

This is the equivalent of the EU forcing Apple to stop trapping people in their walled gardens with their proprietary bullshit. If you buy a product, you should be able to keep getting all of its core functionality to the highest degree feasible. There's no reason these companies can't plan ahead to develop tools to host your own servers after they've decided it isn't worth their own money to keep the official ones running anymore. Every multiplayer game used to do that, once upon a time, as standard. It doesn't require them to develop any new technology. All it requires is that they make an internal branch of the tools they already use to run their own servers, to be released to the public at the end of the game's service life. Or failing that, at least make it feasible for someone else to engineer their own compatible tools from scratch.

I don't care if a game only has 5 people playing it, I hope those 5 people have fun.

Valve has done it for every multiplayer game they've released. They're still making money on CS: Source and fucking Ricochet to this day because of it. All it takes is responsible planning that means their servers are easier to manage and maintain while they're still officially supported.

And it's not like they need to make a big fancy user friendly interface that walks you through setting a server up, though that would be nice, and very thoughtful of them.
