64 is pretty great but some of the early levels kinda suck like the water one, the ghost house, also theirs like a weird flow to the hubworld where you have to go to the basement really early on.

Yeah the pacing of the hubโ€™s kinda janky if you're going in blind. Basement feels like it opens too early, and Hazy Maze Cave kills all momentum right when you're starting to vibe. Jolly Roger Bayโ€™s music slaps but the level itself is slow as hell unless you're a masochist for swimming controls. Still, Peachโ€™s Castle has that unreplicable mystery aura. Even the jank feels like part of the charm now.

It's an absolute dogshit trash game

>absolutely atrocious camera constantly getting stuck on terrain, spazzing out, facing the wrong direction, refusing to go where you want it to
>slippery and awkward controls, especially in underwater and snow levels
>2D Mario's momentum and physics work in a 2D environment where you always have a perfect view and perspective of the action; it's significantly worse in a 3D environment where you are constantly fighting the camera and there are fundamental limitations to perspective/depth perception
>these momentum and physics are especially egregious when the movement is relative to aforementioned awful automatic camera that refuses to go where you want
>constantly boots you out after every star and makes you retread each stage a half dozen times all the way from the beginning of the stage with a tiny stupid piecemeal change
>dial a combo system for platforming
>overall level/enemy/hazard design are extremely basic and boring
>constant easter egg hunt for random bullshit grows old very quick
It feels like a glorified fucking tech demo for 3D movement. You need fucking 6 inch thick nostalgia goggles to still convince yourself it holds up today

>heavily carried by the first 5 levels
Bom-omb's Battlefield is great
Whomp's Fortress is pretty weak
Jolly Roger Bay is good
Cool Cool Mountain is pretty good
Bowser in the Dark world is fine.
Those're the first 5 levels.

Hazy Mazy Cave is great,
Shifting Sand Land is interesting
Bowser in the Fire Sea is better than Dark World
Wet Dry World had an interesting gimmick
Tall Tall Mountain kept calling me back if I remember right
Tiny Huge Island is fantastic (granted, giant enemies is a simple gimmick but I love it every time).
Rainbow Ride is fun when you learn to skip the carpets
Bowser in the Sky... hm I might've liked it less than Fire Sea honestly.
Still, I think SM64 had much more to offer than the first 5 levels.

You either have a high IQ and get it or have a low IQ and don't with this game, I don't know how else to put it. Snoys always rejected the kino that is N64 and went and played Faggot Bandicoot instead since day 1 so there was a majority of stupid people who didn't get it even back then, you can't say it's nostalgia goggles. Some people just can't wrap their mind around it and that's fine, I hope they all fuck off and go play Spideyman 2 on PS5.

For the record, playing this at 11 years old back in the 90s when there was nothing else like it was incomparable. Both in a completely new and enjoyable experience, and how difficult using the controls and manipulating the camera were. Especially on an N64 controller(luckily I had big hands and by '97 was using an "outside" method for the controller that worked)

Most people who say "Mario game bad" is because they struggle at it. Case in point, Mario Sunshine.

And what does it make it if you're whining and crying about a task millions of young children did effortlessly?

Mario 64 is easy as fuck, maybe if he had no arms getting 120 stars would be something to be proud of

Zoomers and alphas need everything to be easy first and then maaaybe after a while hard. Mario 64 is hard to get used to from the start, it is extremely gratifying once you understand stuff like Mario having momentum at all times (even if you are moving extremely slow which is why you commonly see people complain mario does a u-turn instead of just facing back) and slope physics. Its still a great game in the current year, but not for the masses.
Luckily romhacks are a thing

I'm replaying it right now and honestly the worst thing about it is the camera. Shit was broken to hell.

The "high IQ" Mario 64 fan, everyone.

I actually have never even seen it that low before.
