Just gotta say guys, having browsed this board since '07 - this shift in tone towards XBOX is fascinating. I remember when the 7th gen console wars were still stacked on MS' side and PS3 was a joke. Then over time, I heard less and less warring and PS3 just kinda became the defacto console people talked about during the end of 7th gen. Then Xbone, and eventually the Series S/X shit.

Xbox was on top of the world. The 360 felt like a continuation of PS2 with the support and big games, Western and Japanese that all flooded the thing in those early years. I bought PS3, but I was jelly of all the stuff the 360 kids had.

They took that success and utterly fucked themselves. I hope someone does a deep dive, or study into what exactly made them go full retard in the way they did. The 360's lifecycle seems like a genuinely fascinating thing.

The only surprise here is that it took so long. Phil seemed like a nice guy but every move he's pulled has pretty much been the worst one. He liked to cope that Xbox "lost the worst generation to lose" and said that was the reason they could never be anything but third place again but that's horseshit, because Nintendo did it with the Switch. The Wii U only barely outsold the Dreamcast for fuck's sakes, but they took what they learned from that and put out a sexy console with good exclusives. They did it so well the momentum kept going with the Switch 2.

For fuck's sakes, MS owns like half the western industry at this point. Between Rare, Activision-Blizzard and Bethesda they have like hundreds of recognizable IPs they could use. I don't know how you have that and not pump out good exclusives every month. Stop giving Sony your best exclusives like COD and set up a whole bunch of genre studios. Here's like two or three 3D platformer studios, you guys try your hand at making Banjo, you guys try your hand at crash. We need a few more shooter studios cause people love shooters. We got Bethesda? Cool, the show did really well, put everyone on a remake. We got Perfect Dark? Cool, this new studio gets a modest budget - not an AAAA budget, whatever the fuck that means - to do a remake. If it works out you can do PD 2. Do the same thing with Fable instead of throwing gazillions at retards who won't deliver. Also someone just dissolve 343 because those guys are huge retards who'd need millions to release a broken Pong clone. And so on, and so on.

And I say this as someone who was a huge fan of the OG Xbox. Halo, Fable, Xtreme Beach Volleyball (it was fun don't judge me), Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon, it's a hell of a lineup. The 360 at launch kicked the PS3's ass. I don't know what happened since then. It's just been fuckup after fuckup after fuckup.

You see, Nintendo has what is called "Brand Identity", something that Xbox has lost a while ago since they've adopted with "game service" approach instead of a "game platform" approach. Fans of Nintendo know Nintendo and usually, for the most part, trust Nintendo to deliver experiences that their fans can appreciate and value. Not to knock Gamepass, as it can be a great service for those interested in such a "quantity over quality" approach to a video gaming experience. It's just that a lot of gamers want quality over quantity and while on paper Gamepass is a great service for what it offers, it's just not that exciting of a "platform" for gaming when Nintendo and even Playstation can offer exclusive content (for the most part) that not only creates a sense of appreciation and favor for the platform from the perspective of the customer, but also helps establish the brand in the greater gaming community.

I suppose it helps but the Switch appealed to much more than just Nintendo fans. They actually accomplished what they tried to do with the Wii U, which was to make a console that appeals to everyone. Both hardcore and casual players have games to look forward to, kids love them some Mario but they can also play Minecraft and Fortnite and Rocket League on the thing. And Nintendo has been building their brand outside of games with movies and theme parks, their strategy has been pretty good the past decade-ish.

Eventually the game library expanded and the price went down and you had the best blu-ray player at the half cost of blu-ray players but it also played video games, could browse youtube etc, it became a multimedia machine and Sony turned it around. The worst part about Xbox dying is that it won't actually "die" as a brand. It will just morph into a shitty cloud gaming service that the MBAs will run and get their pennies from instead of actually innovating. The only places they can shave the pennies is in storage and physical media at this point. MS would rather ship "live pixels" than dead ones, so streaming will take precedent over downloadable games.

I remember talking a couple of devs who were building an MMO for Stadia, their game environment was literally the size of South America and the asset count was in the trillions (mostly procedural placement of course). 6TB of game assets, and they weren't even done with development. This was in 2020. When you played you'd only load a tiny subset of that 6TB, but you could fast travel to anywhere with a short load screen.

5 years later and cloud gaming is still trash, Stadia is dead, Microsoft only just now released a portable and didn't even design it themselves. There are no truly innovative titles, game AI is fucking trash despite us literally having AI available everywhere.

This is the good ending. The bad ending is they continue to make (shitty) hardware as well.

The best thing they could do at this point is literally retire the Xbox as a gaming brand or sell it to a hardware developer, and then bring all of their studios under "Microsoft Game Studios" and just make games for whatever platforms their devs want, and lay off the DEI/political bullshit.

Sure he greenlit the live service retardation but nearly every publisher is making the same mistake and once they close those retarded studios they'll be back to making the stuff that got them where they are. I was really jelly of Halo 3, Dead or Alive Ultimate and 5, Nnja Gaiden 1 and 2, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. Not delusional at all. It took tears for PS3 to build a similar library.
