Stormblood was considered the lowpoint of XIV storytelling before DT and it was WAY more popular than the critically acclaimed story of Heavensward. Player numbers grew massively during Stormblood. I'm not sure if its entirely a player competency issue. I think its a difference in expectations. Westeners have had a wealth of MMORPGs to play, JP meanwhile barely had any at all? There used to be more to MMOs than just the instanced endgame raiding but at a certain point, that became the entire focal point for endgame in the MMO market. When Yoshida copied WoW, it did so when hardcore instanced raiding was on its highest pedestal. They only looked to mimic that. Why they chose to ignore the other parts of old MMOs is likely because of Yoshi's system-based approach to management where they have a clear formula and plan and that's why they've been so successful at keeping hardcore raiders happy with all this content - Savage, Ultimate, Criterion, Chaos, DRS, etc. Westeners that don't care for this form of endgame are rightfully disenfranchised as a result but to JP, this is the only form of MMO they have ever known.

GW2, SWTOR and TESO aren't in the same circuit, the Korean ones barely even count, and the older ones just chug along with a fraction of the players with their niche communities.
Real fact is you will never develop something as fast as it's consumed, and throwing RNG-fest upon RNG-fest that forces people to artificially stay subbed is not the solution.
That's not to say there aren't things to lengthen that playtime, like relic grinds, but WoW is not a good game to emulate for this.

The main issue I have with it is the hat and gloves. I can understand separating them so players who can't wear them don't have to pay, but it should make the main set cheaper. It it were 12 bucks for the outfit, 6 for the hat, it'd be a slight improvement over normal pricing.

The people whom joined during the Anomaly phase of the game (ShB) that had buffed Eureka and Bozja with plenty of side content for everyone are discovering that the game is actually just a raiders only game that's never actually attempted to evolve it's raid scene anywhere.

I feel like they deserve to be rightfully upset over the Adventurer Foray being co-opted by raiders in an expansion that was already very heavily catering only to raiders. Imagine coming back for 1 month to do the new Foray and it's Bozja 0.5, the annoying parts of Eureka mixed in, and instead of a CLL or Dalriada to engage with they made DRS2 but with an even worse version of BA entry. Not promising.

DT also has a very slow content patch cycle and the MSQ being horrendous has already been spoken at length 1 million times by now so I feel no need to add further. Cosmic Exploration (guild leves but in space) is going to end up with more content updates than Occult Crescent by the time DT ends too which is funnier the longer you think about.

DT is going to go down as the worst MSQ, mediocre side content (not the worst but not good), worst new characters, ect by the time it finishes, and people were at least hopeful the side content for everyone would have offset the bad MSQ and heavy raider focus and they didn't get that either.

It's just...not good. If you've been raiding XIV and treating it as a raid only game for a while it's probably pretty okay since you're getting the majority of content but it's lacking heavily in every other department. When some of the better news is that Viera are getting hats (in 7.3 so decent ways away) you know it hasn't been a good bloody time.
