>>714363176My grandpa retired in 2001 (I remember because we had a party day before 9/11 lmao) due to some health concerns, not because he wanted to, and he was slowly dying inside while he was stuck at home, so given he was a big war movie fan, my dad gave him a copy of Battlefield 1942 to try it out. Grandpa never played any computer game before, at least to my knowledge, but he fell in love with it instantly. He wasn't really "good" at it, but he played it very seriously, usually doing some support role and since BF games gave you points for pretty much anything, he was actually often in the upper half of the scoreboard and got thanked often, which gave him so much joy it probably extended his life by few years.
He got all the BF games except 2142 and some spinoffs, I even showed him Bad Company on my PS3 and he was blown away by the destruction but couldn't play with a controller. He liked all of them he was a little mad at blacks and browns in BF1 lol, not full /pol/ rant but more like "well that ain't right" kind I tried to show him other games, but he was always like "yes, very nice, now let me get back to Battlefield"
he died few month before 2042 was released, he was looking forward to it, even though he said he doesn't get all the sci fi stuff and honestly his playing was affected by dementia and slow reflexes, but he still enjoyed the game
bottom line is, while this is definitely cringe to an outsider, my grandpa would probably loved it and be grateful if we put some gaming stuff on his grave instead of the gay dead dove that's on it now
sorry for the blogpost
