I have played much worse games for the sake of art style. I played the original probably 15 years after it came out so it was a bit jank but Madness Returns is pretty great.
I don't know what people expect out of platformers since it's kind of a dying genre, but MR was very nice to look at and my only real criticism is the ending was weird and rushed if I remember correctly the big bad is a psychiatrist who wanted to fuck your underage sister so he killed your family and Alice gets her revenge by pushing him in front of a train and that's it.
I'm more disappointed there will never be a proper sequel. The last I heard of that one where she would jump from the dreams/minds of famous 19th century figures like a Victorian Psychonauts wasn't going to happen and also America McGee's life is a tragedy.

The sequel would have been kind of a prequel/requel. You can find the full game design bible which has all the story, dialogue, levela, weapons, etc. McGee was running a patreon to make it.

I put about 30 minutes into Madness before I decided to play the first one, for the first time, earlier this year. Atmosphere, level design, cut scenes were all superb. Platforming was abysmal, and most of the weapons, while novel, were not very fun to use.

Madness is still on the queue. I didn't want to jump immediately into it, and longer games have kept me from it.

I didn't find the music in these games that good (meaning worth listening to outside the game) aside from how they fit the atmosphere of the area. I vaguely remember the first games "Heartland" or whatever the final area sounding kind of cool.
Madness Returns had the vale (first area), the area where you're way in the sky on card castles that was pretty nice. Also a the 2D parts of the Oriental area were cool too. The main memorable song is just the menu music that sounds dark and creepy.

Really enjoyed the first one aside from that one spot with all the mirrors where the audio turns all the way to 100 for no fucking reason. Nice variety and fun exploration. Second one was a slight disappointment gameplay wise but the story was good. Japanland sucked and a lot of the levels drag on for way too long. Best experience is on the easiest difficulty for both games.

It's not. Only the original concept of Alice is public domain. McGees design of Alice is not the same and therefore can be and is copyrighted by EA. Simple gameplay which gets repetitive, but it definitely has the soul to make it worth finishing.

It did drag a bit near the end but the visuals and enemy design was the peak imo, foreshadowing of the dollmaker was great too with the sexual implications of the dolls.

the original had a remaster included with AMR. it still works well on modern PCs. it recently got a mod called vorpalfix that fixes a lot of issues with things that were missing or changed from the original release, i played it not too long ago and it's superior to the original release now.

It's really annoying that the remaster was built inside Madness Returns as a pre-purchase bonus, and EA gave zero fucks about re-releasing it as a standalone.
Unlocking it is as simple as changing text files, and placing the files but still it still sucks that you still have to launch the remaster through madness returns.

I definitely agree. I don't think it's THAT tedious, since at least the umbrella, pepper grinder and hobby horse upgrades provide some diversity on the fights, but overall, it felt like there was just stuff sort of missing.
Environments, atmosphere and music though were legit pure soul. 100% agreed on Card Castles in the Sky, would also add The Mysterious East, the Siren level, the Hatter's domain. So much colour, so much vibrance and personality. It felt surreal in the best way. The first game has this as well, I would argue, but the twisted fairytale designs in MR really elevated it so much for me.
