Why the fuck is chapter 3 so fucking garbage?
There are parts I enjoy, Tenna's prerendered animation for one is great, but holy fuck, I fully understand why it was packaged with chapter 4.

Yeah, it feels like Toby got a bit too comfy leaning into the "lol random" energy that the fandom eats up. I get that every chapter's meant to feel like its own little genre experiment, but Chapter 3 really just felt like filler content with a clown nose. The minigames drag on, the pacing's whack, and the secret route being so punishing for curiosity kills the replay mood. Tenna's bit was kino though-reminded me of old-school FMV horror vibes. Hopefully Chapter 4 reels it back in and remembers that Undertale's charm wasn’t from being a meme machine.

Good to know I wasn't the only one who felt mozambique drilled by the first 15 minutes of chapter 3. I actually thought the prerendered feature presentation was jumping the shark already and then we got the ralsei plush advertisement and I thought it was over and toby succumbed to the meta-irony entirely. This feeling kept with me throughout the whole chapter and I only really recovered by the time you return to the green room when it is all empty. The final Tenna fight, the knight fight and the whole of chapter 4 are absolutely great, but that first 2/3rds of the chapter gave me serious whiplash. I did enjoy it a bit more during a repeat playthrough, but still

I find Undertale and Deltarune both are saved by their optional content a lot. I don't have an issue with that, but Undertale would fall a lot flatter without genocide, when Chapter 1 came out Jevil was a big talking point even though he's probably the least developed secret boss, Chapter 2 is great but it's in large part because Spamton and Snowgrave feel as robust as they do and then Chapter 3 is brought up a lot by the Sword route and fighting the Knight for real. Chapter 4 doesn't have as fleshed out side content comparatively, but it has a more fleshed out main route at least.

The rhythm game was great, and I liked the cooking one as well. Zelda was solid, and so were the quizzes. Didn't like the Suzziella game though.

There's literally THREE ways for you to get to the secret boss.
1. Get S rank on both boards
2. Just BUY the S rank from one of the vending machines
3. Are you just BAD at games? Play as poorly as you can on both boards to get Z rank and THAT room will lead you to the S-rank room you need to go to to fight the secret boss

At first I liked Chapter 4 better than 3
After replaying both 2 times each, I enjoy Chapter 3 far more than I did 4
4 just feels really small once you've actually played through it a couple of times.
While 3 is a lot more fun to replay, is packed with a bunch more secrets and lot of cool background info on characters like Spamton.
Not the mention the entire SWORD quest is a lot better than the magic axe's sidequest, even though I liked Gerson a lot, the implications of the SWORD quest are just way more interesting.

This is pretty much the thought I had while playing it. I was there at patient zero on tumblr- and since I was young when it released and didn't have the means to buy it, I vicariously experienced it through others. I will say I was surprised by how straight forward and simple it was. I may have known about the characters and big plot beats due to absorbing/reading up on them online, but most of the actual gameplay was new to me.
I don't think I like it THAT much compared to other RPGs, even if me being spoiled definitely impacted it, but I'm glad to have checked it off my list. Though I wonder if even if I played it in its heyday I'd be as fervent about it as so many others were, however with all the fancontent and analysis being made at the time, it likely would've ended up fanning the flames for younger me.

I will say that I wish True Lab was its own thing entirely because it was the coolest part of the whole game.

If there is a Gaster fight eventually, I think he would be like Sans or Stephen from SMT in that he doesn't move around very much and relies on those blasters or interdimensional/determination/insert vague magical energy here combined with some science machinery. Here's are two examples:
- "Sans is the coolest" (artwork and whatever)

On the first point it becomes pretty obvious once you meet the guy, there's nothing to spoil there. On the second point - you fight Papyrus, if spoiled you probably expect to fight Sans and nobody is going to actually know what is coming until it happens - and the moment it happens it's because you did a thing knowingly that would result in Sans fighting you at a moment you will have already seen.

The only thing missing from playing Undertale so late is that /v/ is already done with it and you won't find that sort of conversation and hype unless you actually meet a person who was there (that nobody will ever admit to). The demo came out like 15 years ago or something and Homestuck is like a 20 year old hype thing (that nobody sane would admit they were there for).

Yeah, the fact the true route is locked behind S rank is fucking gay and really soured my enjoyment of Chapter 3, it turned Deltarune into a sweatfest. I think I replayed Ch3 3 times to get the fucking S ranks, it was not fun, I had no clue you had to get some key in the first game too, so when I finally got to the secret island in the second game I got fucked because LOL DIDN'T YOU GET THE KEY IN THE FIRST GAME WELL SUCKS TO SUCK KID.
The previous chapters' secret bosses didn't have this bullshit so it really came out of left field, in previous chapters you could enjoy them at your leisure and when you felt like it you could go take on the secret bosses, it wasn't this convoluted, you weren't permanently locked from content if you didn't get X thing at Y time, that would have been acceptable if the game established from the beginning that was the norm, but that's not what happened. I really disliked this inconsistency compared to previous chapters.

I think Toby is really good at acknowledging those small things players might do. There might not be many actual choices in DR but he knows how to make the characters feel real by taking the time to add extra content for obscure situations.
