Both are only good if you want/need portability instead of just using a PC. Deck works better as a secondary device, and can be used to temporarily replace your main device if it breaks.

Like, maybe I am an obsessive autist, but I generally have at least one web browser open with a few hundred or a few thousand tabs, including a few pages that actively have WIP forum posts or something open. So to play a game, i'd have to just close that all out and lose all my open text fields, or maually save everything first, which I never have time to do, so I rarely play games

Is there a way I can just freeze/suspend my browser process and dump all of it's RAM to a file so it's not using any system resources to start a game up, or something?

I only really do light gaming when traveling, so personally I'd go with a Deck.
It's nice to use on the plane or on the train or in a hotel or in the Uber on the way to an event or something, while the gaming laptop is really only going to be used in a hotel.
Plus, sleep mode is fucking dogshit in Windows, so I won't be able to just suspend a game and know I can immediately pop back into it like I can on my SD without my battery being utterly fucking demolished.

idk I think it depends on the laptop. There's nothing more comfier than running a linux on laptop, because it's such a massive "de-bloat", and if it's any laptop that is even moderately competitive (doesn't even have to be gaming laptop), you will immediately be able to appreciate this piece of tech that's running without the windows bloat, even if it's just for watching movies or anime on your TV with a hdmi cable. That's what it does for me at least, I see gear I ask "well what does it do? does it fullfill its purpose?", a laptop tends to have such low levels of expectations on it even if you pay premium for it, and because of this it will almost always meet those expectations. With something like desktop PC running windows, the threshold of "does it fullfill its duty" is much, much more higher, and is very much unlikely to meet the goals I've set in my mind.

Laptop is way better than a steamdeck. You can get one for the same price that's 2x as strong. That said the Deck is way better in terms of portability despite both needing a backpack. However the Deck is also end of life (you can even tell since Valve is barely updating it anymore outside of minor fixes) so you should aim for a Z2 handheld like the Xbox Rog Ally or even Legion Go S.

The first one was terrible and had like 6th VRAM but I used to raid on WoW with it and it was absolute ass. So I ended up spilling something on the keyboard and ruined the keys so had to rip them off because it had accrued some liquid damage. I have a powerful desktop for home gaming, a decent phone, and a work laptop for work. If I want to play something demanding I just do it on my desktop, then use my SD for less demanding games and travel gaming.
