Also make sure to build AA in Trump's territory before the 2ACW kicks off, and after it does you can do decisions on the map to build some more. Winning the election and doing the focuses definitely helps make things easier, but losing isn't a total loss since there's a focus that gives you 10k guns at the start of the war.
