Deep down he had the ability to be a good dad but he was too busy sucking his own dick to ever do so, he was more of a dad to Tidus when he wanted to get killed by him than he ever was in his childhood. In the end he did redeem himself by ultimately helping save the world alongside his son, knowing full well that they would have to sacrifice it all, but it took a whole summoner's journey and the revelation of what the final aeon really was for him to realize that he wasn't going home and that it just wasn't worth being a dipshit because no one cared about him in Spira like they did in Zanarkand, something that happened to Tidus as well.

In fact, Jecht only stopped his drinking after he made a complete ass of himself in public and hit a giant shoopuf and inconvenienced the only two dudes in the world, or ever, he actually liked and called his friends. It took THAT to make him finally stop.
