What precisely do they mean by โ€œfor lifeโ€? Because they end support for operating systems after 10 or 15 years even if you have a license for life. Companies stop using that operating system like Steam meaning your license is useless. I remember Microsoft saying that Windows 10 was for life too lol.

Never understood the hate it gets over 10. Both requires you to spend like a week removing built in malware, de-bloating, configuring shit and adding back legacy features to be a usable system, but once you do it's the same exact system pretty much.

I don't get why everyone suddenly pretends Win 10 isn't just 90% cancer. If you can survive that tumour, you can survive Win 11.

Windows 11 Pro is objectively the best desktop OS. It looks nice, performs well, and is full of actual power user features.
Desktop Linux is now 'good enough' for gaming that I've been using it for the past year. But it's undeniable that from a compatibility perspective, Windows dominates.

My racing wheel doesn't work on Linux
Several games are blocked / don't work on Linux
There are frequent bugs and workarounds you need to apply.

How, exactly? No retail customer will ever buy a subscription to a desktop OS. Non-gamers would just move to Apple faster than they already are. There's no market for an OS subscription outside of enterprise.

I have never had performance issues, but I also don't play AAA sloppa either. There was no observable performance increase moving to Linux.
I cannot imagine how shit your desktop PC must be, or how much you fail to administrate your machine if the OS affects it's gaming performance to be perceptibly worse.

What exactly don't you understand about this? All the games I play run at my displays refresh, which I cap anyway to stay in the VRR window without buffering frames.
The 11 pro desktop experience is snappy, it looks nice, it doesn't crash, and compatibility is a non-contest.
Like I said, I moved to Linux because it's 'good enough', but for gaming and work, Windows 11 is king.

No way! Your old Windows 7 keys still work. Wait, not as of 2023. But you can find Windows 10 keys for $10 or less, or you can just never activate it. The only penalty is a watermark and not being able to 'customize your theme'. Microsoft makes enough from data collection to not care further.

Nothing beats Windows for gaems because it's got nearly everything native, and for what it doesn't, it's got the best emulators.
That being said, if emulation autists keep at it then I suppose in some far future Windows might have nothing going for it other than engineering software. But that is not now.

Based. I'm still using my windows 7 as my main machine. Also could anyone else using windows 7 confirm if steam's downloads are being fucked with? It's working perfectly fine if I download or update a game that hasn't been updated within the past few months, but games that did are refusing to download and giving me a "content unavailable" bullshit error. I tried everything. Clear download cache, switch download regions, repair library, and even uninstalled steam and reinstalled steam. It's always the same games refusing to download/update. Works fine on my side windows 10 setup.

Go into your BIOS and turn on the TPM. Look for 'Intel PTT' if you have intel or 'AMD fTPM' if you have AMD. It may also be listed as 'TPM' or something similar to 'trusted platform module'. Both AMD and Intel cpus have TPM integrated within them but they default to 'off'. Worth a shot to check this out, anon.

other than the desktop taskbar being complete aids, not a lot honestly. It's still windows, it's still ad infested if you aren't using an enterprise(tm) flavor and has some QoL improvements if you use a KVM switch that doesn't do the liveness EDID crap to trick out your GPU into thinking it is still on.
also borderless window applications don't have wasted compositing done by dwm anymore.

I remember when 7 would send you ads to upgrade to 10. At any moment, M$ can push an update to do whatever malicious spyware, adware bullshit they want, even to "le heckin wholesome 7." That's why I still use Linux since 2013. No reason to play the game anymore. in 2025, Linux is about as good at executing video games as windows. Hell, on Linux, I can execute video games in isolated sandboxes too (flatpak, Steam Pressure Vessel).

It's disingenuous to claim SteamOS is better. It's a very complex problem on Linux still and while you can get higher frames, you may suffer other weird problems like shitty GPU scheduling starving tasks and nonfunctioning display tearing (forced vsync). HDR support basically requires you to nest multiple Wayland compositors and wine still has some indirection by depending on XWayland.

A new "completely fair scheduler" for GPUs is in the works, Wine for Wayland will become the norm soon, GNOME AND KDE Plasma now have HDR support, but we'll still have wait(tm) and see.

Don't have any problem on my Deck. If anything, I've had no problem running older games on SteamOS too that Windows causes me a ton of headaches over.

it doesn't retard. that's why DLSS is shit. higher FPS doesn't make up for the dogshit latency.

Yes, people have measured that and it's doing better than windows and the s2 is.

That's one of the things W11 is awful about with all the garbage it's running in the background.

Seething how? I'm just challenging people to be realistic. I'm a Linux user as well but to claim it's all sunshine is also a bit disingenuous. I've had to do a lot of tweaks and patches and surgery to AMDGPU to get optimal performance and stability.
