All the best PS2 games have ports on most later consoles meanwhile the best Nintendo games from that system are rarely ported to new systems. Scarcity means more valuable.

Pretty much, the PS2's identity has been eroded quite a bit by the sheer number of ports and remakes. Nintendo, conversely, doesn't do remakes for a lot of their best games. I'm sure there's some logic behind it, but my headcanon is because they don't want people to see their games from an era that didn't largely suck fat cocks and compare them to their dogshit selection now.

The thing that is confusing you is that you are looking at the sixth gen in terms of hardware sales and not software sales.
Gamecube fans purchased and played many copies of video games, while PS2 fans appear to have purchased the console and then placed it as a figurepiece on their coffee table.

Most of the PS2 players stopped playing video games altogether as they got out of their teens.

Its popularity is due to nintendo being assholes and locking away its library for nearly 20 years. Ps2 games have all been made available in some form in the last 2 decades so there isn't much nostalgia to it.

I'm a zoomer and I grew up with a GameCube. PS2 was the more successful console by a wide margin (GC was third, behind the OG Xbox) and had a far better library, but I didn't actually start playing any PS2 games until I was in high school with PCSX2

Nintendo breaking from the natural progression path of "Gamecube but stronger" with the Wii unlike the other consoles that did follow "the same but stronger" mentality for the first half of the 7th gen, left an entire cohort of millennials to stew in their own abandoned interpretations of various properties which radicalized them into diehards that would not let the cube die via things like the melee community and Dolphin Emulator.
