I mean it certainly wasn't a great success considering they predicted about 50 million sales and ended up with less than half of that with some very steep discounts. I am sure Nintendo did not want it to sell about 10mil less units than the N64 just like they didn't want the N64 to sell about 10mil less units than the SNES, it's a trend they couldn't be happy about.

I noticed you posted the black GameCube instead of the much more famous Purple Lunchbox, no hiding the Fisher Price esc controller though. GameCube definitely wasn't a console for kiddies, it had games for all ages but they really shot themselves in the foot with childish console design and redesigning Zelda into a more child friendly style(yes the game looks and plays well).
I guess they were hoping to sweep the kids market only to watch in horror as most of the parents bought PS2's for themselves and bought child friendly games on that console for their children. They really picked the worst time for this too, the early millennium was the peak of the "video games are for children, grow up!" vs "adults can game too!" discourse.
