American culture especially is like this, it's just a procession of radical social liberalism, secularism, and hedonism flip-flopping to reactionary religious moralfagging and back again, going all the way back to the first settlers.
The internet was less focused on this before social media because the number of people on the internet was smaller. It was a smaller slice of the population who were more like enthusiasts and the internet was generally considered silly and not taken very seriously.
Nowadays the internet has almost superceded reality in perceived importance. Half the news headlines are just "somebody said something on twitter". So it becomes a cultural battleground as people lose the ability to distinguish between the internet and real life.
This is what makes 4chan tolerable as a platform, it's explicitly designed to not be taken seriously. The /b/ disclaimer should be affixed to every site on the internet.
