I became irrationally angry the other day remembering the elementary school teacher whoโ€™d take away all my toys and never give them back. I didnโ€™t dare tell my parents because theyโ€™d beat me so they were just lost to me forever. She took some really nice toys too. I hope that bitch burns in hell.

A) The fucking batteries would die and mom wouldn't get you more
B) Most parents didn't want you on your gameboy all the time
C) There's only so many times you can play Mario World and some shitass racing game before you get bored.

I swear they add shit like that to fuck with certain kids. I used to obsess over those kinds of places, especially in games.
>What do you mean there's a random empty island here?
>There has to be something!
>I bet there's a hidden entrance to something cool (In vidya versions)
>Proceed to either imagine all kinds of scenarios involving the islands or in games spend fucking hours pacing them trying to unlock their secrets

That don't make sense.
Putting gates into your semi-open map to reach somewhere else make it a hub.
If those gate link to each other, then it's a semi-open map with fast-travel point.

Arguably that make the average Bethesda game a hub. Starfield procedurally generating map or not.

Joke aside, and ignoring the simply making those underground levels, it would be creative to have superposed overworld as "distinct plane of existence", where you are spatially at the same place, but don't interact with the other plane the same way.
