Like, its not something that's proud work like a fireman or a doctor, but it also was a legitimate career path more than flipping burgers at BK. Journalists have always been whores to the power, only a handful haven't been, and they were killed in the process.

there has always been respectable writers and reviewers, issues with video game journalism is that with how games have been seen as and honestly still are seen as toys the barrier for entry to review games have been incredibly low because no one really cares so gaming journalism got filled with pretty shit writers many with no actual formal training or journalistic education.

I loved EGM as a kid and I thought it would be cool to write about video games all day. But then in my teenage years the video game magazines were on life support and clickbait arose in the 2010s, plus the clickbait people got access to twitter so they could show off how retarded they are 24/7. That is when it lost any respectability it had.

Sure, EGM eventually died an inglorious death in the clickbait era, but before that they had a lot of thoughtful reviews. The Rumble Roses incident showed that they wouldn't bow down to outside pressure. The Seanbaby columns at the end of the magazine were always funny. It was a real gem. I wish I could find the picture in my folder, but there was also an article they did on game scores being influenced by bribes (or maybe that was PSM, my brain is hazy). Overall, I just haven't seen the same retarded bullshit from EGM that I have seen from other gaming journalism outlets past and present, so I guess it wins by default. Feel free to prove me wrong though. Oh, and shoutout to Tips & Tricks for their excellent "Japan corner" and tournament columns, as well as their dedicated Armored Core 2/3 column they had for a while

The real answer is that most people got sick of the editing. If you watched Jim Sterling for any period of time, you knew a few things:
