All the DLCs kinda suck except Dead Money.
Legion isn't fleshed out enough in the base game at all.

Gameplay wasnt anywhere near what you'd want it to be for industry standard but it was given a pass because Obsidian managed to add iron sights.

That's literally why this game gets sucked off so much. Gunfags were happy because of the variety and iron sights that fallout 3 sorely lacked, and RPG fags were happy by the thin veneer paint of subfactions and bull bear, and OG West Coast fallout

Short answer - It's a popular game that's really easy to mod and a lot of people play it, so naturally troons also like it, they happen to be attention whores

Long Answer - New Vegas does a decent job at portraying Gays and Lesbians as humans and not just blatant stereotypes that we see in the media. There are Perks that open dialogue associated with what the Player chose. You don't find out that Arcade or Veronica are homosexual until you pester them about asking questions about themselves. And even then it's just a mention and almost throw away line.
In modern media, these characters would only be defined by their sexuality and it would be shoved down your throat at every turn. But in NV, it's just part of who they are.

I feel New Vegas and Fallout as a whole is much better in peoples' minds and/or with tons of mods than it is in actuality. The originals don't hold up. Brotherhood of Steel exists. 3 and NV are unplayable without mods. 4 and 76 are unplayable regardless.

Fallout 3 was better. Look, I don’t need my post-apocalyptic fun to turn into a 12-hour lecture on economics, faction politics, and which shade of beige bureaucracy I want to die under. Fallout 3 lets me be a vault kid with a laser gun out to find my dad and maybe blow up a town because it looks at me funny and that’s perfect. I dont know about it being 10/10 but it has a nice combination of writing and setting that makes it interesting to play and replay. While the writing isnt mind-bendingly good it allows for some exploration of the factions and their flaws without being overly preachy one way or another and the characters all have enough personality to at least make some of them interesting to listen to even if they CAN be preachy. The DLCs are mostly good and help to expand the depth or explain events in the main game. Gameplay is just ok. The setting is the main draw for me because I like the cowboy larp and i think it blends in super well with fallout. For me, its for the guy that wants to be a laser rifle wielding cowboy making friends across the mojave and doesnt mind wading through a dumbed down intro to philosophy class along the way.

The fact that you have so many choices in quests makes it feel less linear. Which is completely fine by me, as it gives you a lot more replayability options.

It's not even linear, it lets you book it straight to Vegas and the game acknowledges that you skipped the south route, you can also go through Primm Pass to Novac

The game gives you these options but is still better with the intended designed progression than any of the "you can le go anywhere" open world games that feel like arbitrary watered down sandboxes and not real worlds, a handcrafted experience will always be superior, San Andreas also forces you through its story to unlock the full world and is a better game for it

I agree. Especially since exploring FNV through the "standard" route is simply a good way to get into the world, immerse yourself, understand it better and see how it works.
If someone, for their first playthrough, started to run straight at Vegas - that's fine, but I think it ruins the experience a bit. Once you're on your yet-another-playthrough it makes sense. Though even if I did finish FNV like 10 times I still do it the standard route because I simply like it, and I may finish the quest slightly differently from the last time I did it.

It's the game I have owned on steam the longest that I have left unplayed, bought back in 2012 for $5 and just kept putting it off. Hoping to change that this month or next, anything I should know going in?

owb is accessible early on and gives good equipment and boons.
lr gives good upgrades for ed-e and is an easy place to make money.

dead money is a creative scenario and you have to tackle it differently so it plays uniquely.

Dead Money also is amazing money maker. If you complete it early in the game, you're going to be set for the rest of the game very well.
The rewards are pre-war cash that you can freely collect across the DLC and sell 10 caps per piece (if you're smart enough you can gather 10-15k cash and then make 100-150k caps that way), vending machine itself and computer that generates infinite chips, which generates aid items and weapon repair kits, which are very useful. You can hoard bunch of broken weapons (like SMGs or trail carbines), cheaply fix them using 3-4 repair kits, and sell guns for full price. If you got JSawyer or forks, you can convert weapon repair kits to ones for armor, then hoard bunch of Legion and NCR armors, fix them, and then make tons of caps.
There are also holorifle which is amazing energy weapon for mid-game, and you can get bunch of BARs (6-8 across DLC iirc) but unless you change spread via FNVedit BAR is garbage.

7/10 at best. The game barely itself with duct tape and boogers, and even ran like shit when it was released. You need 5 mods to make it work without shitting itself. Visually it is atrocious because of bad lighting with everything looking like it's either made of plastic or coated in lube, shitty brown filter, subpar animations, and character models looking like ass. The saving factor are quests, exploration, and gameplay.

Some games feel awful to play and clunky is the best way to describe it. Fallout New Vegas is a great example.

New Vegas feels awful to play because of all this. I swear people who pretend Gamebryo aren't clunky have never played a game with smooth and well polished gameplay. You would probably lose your mind playing something like Titanfall 2 because you couldn't believe something can play so well compared to Bethshit.
