I doubt that this series and Shantae are really that good as people say, certainly not as good as Mario and Crash, or even Sonic.

Klonoa is good. Same for Shantae. Don't play the Phantom Reverie Series though, the game is full with bugs, including simple shit like the jumping sound being improperly cropped off. Play the original games in an emulator, you'll get save states on top of it when you do that.

It's okay. I tried to get into the GBC Shantae game as well but got disinterested in it. Kinda slow with so many enemies that take more than a single hit. It's like they wanted everything to be an axe armor rather than birds flying at you.

Heard the story is good in Klonoa, but I skipped every cutscene in Klonoa 1 and 2. No clue what they're about. I think it's a fine game to give to a kid. Someone that has a lot of games under their belt might be a littler underwhelmed.

The GBA platformers are very fun puzzle-platformers. The PlayStation games are more action focused with a likeable story and characters. Klonoa's biggest issue was bad marketing, bad release windows, and a set-up that works against the appeal of mascot platformers. The endings to the console games are good, but Klonoa having to leave the world at the end makes it hard to build a roster of lovable reoccurring characters. That's probably why the portable games break the rules and you things like Huepow and Lolo in the same game.

Klonoa is good, the 2nd game in particular aged well, the problem is that the original game, that one with a gut wrenching story, i dont think has ever received a faithful remake

theres the Wii remake, which sucks, and the Phantasy Reverie series which sucks less, but has the problem of very rigid character models that ruin very important scenes from the game

I just discovered Klonoa for PS1 (Phantomille) for the very first time now that I purchased a PS1 and a CRT TV and after a few levels I have to say it's a beautiful game graphically speaking (2.5D rules on a good CRT) and the game itself is pretty fun with well thought out levels. I'm impressed. Too bad I can't buy the game, a copy costs like 200 or 300€ here.

The 2nd game got screwed over by GTA3 changing the gaming landscape in a way that gutted any cartoonish/brightly coloured game on Playstation overnight. The handheld games got buried by starting off on Wonderswan.

If they had just put Moonlight Museum on Gameboy/Colour instead of Wonderswan they could have had an easy ride on Pokemon's wave to popularity and then Empire of Dreams would have had an established fanbase by the time it launched on GBA.
