The duration of them and only having one is partly at fault for that. Happens to me all the time since we;re spamming one key for the most part.
If you remember the game pre-job gauges, we'd have all of that shit as stacks etc. in our buffs/debuffs.
Just from a player attention standpoint, it's bad design for splitting that focus for no reason. There's no reason why they couldn't still track gauge shit on buffs/debuffs again.
I also lose track of DRK's job gauge because it's so meaningless, now that we don't need to track and save for Living Shadow, outside of minor optimisation that happens so infrequently it's kinda comical.

Yeah I played MNK originally and I was trained to watch my GL stacks like a hawk. And some jobs actually do still check buffs. I play PCT now and I check my buffs pretty frequently to double check how many hyperfantasia or black palette stacks I have left. Maybe because I'm used to doing it from back then, but it's much easier to just check my buffs instead of trying to decipher how many flowers are in my landscape. But yeah then there are plenty of jobs where you can't even check buffs anymore. There's not a lot of consistency.

Oh please, GL was the least of things to track on MNK. It was always can I get another 123 out before I need to refresh ToD/Demo/Twin/DK and if they're all good, did I refresh ToD last round so I can Fracture. And then there's the tracking for a clean damage PB into refreshes if it's going spare.
Later TK bullshit was simple af compared to it too.

But no, my entire point isn't that there's never a need to track buffs/debuffs, your or bosses, but that gauge has just become competition for your focus and the only benefit of that split is "looks cool". But the because gauge, everybody must have gauge, so we end up with shit like the Fairy gauge and a focus on build/spend etc.
The only good build/spend mechanics they ever came up with are TK (original and riddle versions) and the original Geirskogul

You really didn't. Forced disengage time is fight specific and for the most part you were either screwed or you weren't or you planned PBs around it and you almost always had Shoulder Tackle because it had a min. range req. MOst of the aoes you have more than enough time to hit the GCD, dodge out and be back before the next for it to be any worry.
GL was the most important, but it was the least to worry about.

This is part of the issue and it's schizophrenic (design team change), the first was "functional", then your focus was split away from this for "form" and now they're left with little else to do for mechanics other than return focus to that area that they've previously split your focus away from.
Something functional got hit with the "form over function" mentality and they're left with the need to return to function but previous form is actually in the way now.

I guess you and I just track things differently because for me flicking my eyes between my DoTs and my GL buff was how I tracked what I could do. I also remember times like in T1 where I'd delay my coeurl GCD so I could hit Arm of the Destroyer's silence on ADS since we didn't have a BRD for High Voltage, and I had to make sure I didn't delay it too long and fuck everything. Or in A12S making sure to maintain it going into the time warps.

But you're only talking about hyper-niche bullshit with those. I did the ADS thing too but that was because of an unreliable PLD, I was also doing it manually with Selene because pet AI was awesome before tehy fucke it up in 2.1. You could do the same kinda thing in Titan to maintain GL through the transition after killing the heart, it basically had to be your Demo that killed it for the delayed refresh giving JUST enough time to get a full 123 after it's targettable again. And even that took absurd amounts of SkS (Det/SkS best build, back when Det was a real stat).
There's always things you can do for a fight but that's not the baseline of it.
It might be because I've fucked around with every level of SkS imaginable back then that, outside of extremely high values and trying to see if it can fit more with it, it was whatever in the grand scheme.
