I'll be blunt, Vanilla smw is something i view the same as vanilla doom1 and doom2, stuff that's monumental for their time, but anything smw is easily outdone through romhacks that elevate the game on such a stratospherical degree that coming back to the original games is a chore.
Though if you have not (somehow) played it, give it a try, it's pretty easy aside from 1 level, but to say it lives up to its hype? I doubt it, game's just an alright fun experience.

This game is propped up exclusively by a shadow council of brazilians who deem it the best thing ever because they played it on their PS2s when they were 5

Why does 4chan keep saying SMW is slippery? It's a very snappy game, especially compared to 1 and 3, which feel like you're constantly on ice.

Yes. I personally thing the first Mario is the best because it's something you can beat in an hour, but I think Mario World does the long form game better than Mario 3.

This seems like safe space to talk about this.

I always get lost in the woods and stop playing. I have been emulating this game since the early 00's and always stop there.
Now I could look up a quick guide, but I kind of had my fill of it. There are more "fun" platformers out there. It took nearly 2 decades to get those platformers, so its in no way a stab at Mario, but if my kid would want to play Mario, that boy is getting Wonder or a 3d mario

Yoshi's Island and Mario 64 are the only good Mario platformers simply because they understood how to combine linear with exploration. You don't just up a featureless alternate route platform and feel like you're exploring, you're just doing it because it's there and you feel nothing taking that route. You explore shit in Yoshi's/64 because the games are actual fucking detailed beautiful worlds and you want to look at everything.
