Gta sa let you skip driving if you failed a mission because it was boring as fuck after a while. I think the issue is the maps have only gotten bigger and sa was finally big enough that it did start to feel tiresome compared to vice city which lets you drive from one side to the other in like 2 minutes max.
Gta4 added taxis which i abused to skip half of the driving in the game lol

As a father of 3 that's been married twice, currently going through a divorce, dealing with an aging mother, working 2 full time jobs, developers creating time wasting shit like this is awful, and I'm glad to see them starting to add in features like this to appeal to 90% of gamers.
We don't have time for this, and we're lucky if we get 1 hour per week to play a game. Do I want to spend that time driving a car in a game? No. I want to engage with a story, see the credits, and be happy that I beat the game after 6 months of playing. If you think anything is wrong with this.

normally in that case if the dev actually gave a shit or two about his game, his would put side objectives around the map that you can accomplish to change the way the main objective can be completed (like in farcry 2) giving you a reason other than filler dialogue to actually drive and keep playing.
an other way to do it is making the driving a part of the mission or simply making it a cinematic of your character driving with fade to black when he is about to start the mission
