Mario vs Sonic after 2002 is so forced.

At the end of the day Mario is a mascot, a lifeless puppet for a brand. Say what you will about Sonic, but he's at least a character.

Mario gets away with his million spinoffs because they mostly incorporate major parts of his identity with regards to what's been established in the games. If there are turtle shells in a Mario spinoff, everyone expects those to spin and slide around on surfaces because that's what happens in the main games, so they do. Even in the tennis game where you play as the turtle itself.

as far as I know theres only two canon sonics. American Sonic and Japanese Sonic. They often refer to them as "modern sonic" and "classic sonic". American Sonic is taller, has a edgier design, and speaks with English voice. Japanese sonic is short, cuter design, and doesn't speak at all.
