The stupidest video game retcons you’ve ever seen.

Arena didn't have that.

They probably retconned it cause it was equatorial.

Then retconned it back to fit Arena and LotR

I do understand why they couldn't actually portray the forests but there's been multiple chances to unretcon it since and they've never taken it.

Everyone says limitations but so many other devs make it work or put more time towards the project. Its a Bethesda thing, they are ten years maybe 15 behind everyone else.

May last year, they announced they had hit $657m in sales. Since that $400m highball estimate includes marketing, by all sources, that's $257m+ of profit.

That doesn't even come close to the stupidest retcon in TES. They got rid of the Levitation spell, and said akchuelly it's gone because the Empire made it illegal. Take a few seconds to process that.

As stupid as I find that choice, its not a retcon. A retcon is completely altering an established event or character or setting to fit some new narrative.

False on both counts, literally is a retcon. Levitation was legal in Morrowind in 3E 427, when the game takes place; Oblivion says that the Levitation Act was passed in 421.
It's an even dumber retcon when you realize you can buy Levitation spells from the Legion themselves in Castle Ebonheart.

Game developers don't know what equatorial jungle trees look like so they just model trees that are in the area.

Whether it was or wasn't, would love to see the sales numbers for Sharted Space by the way, the fact is it was so bad as a game that it singlehandedly destroyed Bethesda's reputation.
Almost nobody except the extreme copefiend hopium addicts is looking forward to ES6 now. Everyone expects it to be boring as fuck, corporately sanitized to hell, and filled with the horrendous writing of Emil Pagliacci that was only ever bareable because the game around it was fun to mod.

Starfield is so bad that the old Bethesda mantra of Mods Will Fix It simply does not apply. And without modding, all a Bethesda game is is a boring, poorly made pile of shit with bad writing and bad gameplay.

It took one game to destroy Bethesda's reputation. And when your reputation is "They make shit, but it's fun to muck about with" it should NOT be a reputation you can destroy.
When everyone acknowledges that you are shit and STILL likes you? Still likes your shit?
You've got to catastrophically fuck up for people to say your shit, your actual shit they've been enjoying since you started guzzling laxatives in 2005, is finally too shitty to excuse anymore.

While the date of 3E 421 actually predates Morrowind's start date of 3E 427, the province of Morrowind is not subject to Imperial laws due to joining the Empire by treaty rather than conquest, allowing otherwise illegal practices (such as slavery).

Yeah, but that's real, dumb people. In the real, gay ass universe. We're talking about a different universe where you can drink a god damn bottle that makes you smarter, and 200 year old elves exist that are smart enough to learn how to teleport, shoot fireballs and shit.
Anonymous No.714846590

Well yeah, and for similar reasons; the city wasn't an overworld, just contained cells with an "open" sky. You can also levitate in the caves and shit. It'd be legal in Mournhold anyways, as it's the Indoril capital.

>cause it was equatorial
Has this ever been confirmed. To me it always seemed that Tamriel was in the northern hemisphere with the south being closest to the equator.

Anyway, the jungles never made any sense. No massive empire would build a capital in the middle of a jungle. The jungle is mentioned once or twice but nothing else we saw in previous games would indicated a jungle. Neither the architecture nor the clothing or even the culture would suggest that the empire was located in a jungle.

A smarter way to retcon the jungle would have been deforestation. The empire needed the wood for expansion.

The point isn't the settings its that people will adhere to laws and orders that go against them or don't even make sense. Nobody fought back against the outlaws for magic just like nobody is fighting back now for higher wages, lower cost of living and taxation.

Bethesda seems to really like using it's illegial so you can't do it as an excuse, levitation, necromancy (but then gave you a staff that could do it anyway, maybe they unexpectedly got necromancy working after they already designed the game around it not existing) and then in Starfield mechs are illegial
