FF was created by both Sakaguchi and Uematsu, who doesn't get enough credit for the series
He was more than just a guy who wrote songs and then the designers used his songs. He was part of the design process from day 0.
Sakaguchi was the creator, and his style is clearly traditional, old-school RPG. He was friends with Uematsu and brought him on early. Before the series really took off, they got Kitase (he brought more cinematic considerations to the development), and how could we forget Nomura (who initially was just an illustrator, but quickly moved up the ladder, bringing his signature dreamlike approach to design mixed with fashion).

All of these different things, which feel disparate, had perfect cohesion with each other and contributed toward a perfect vision. And, for a time, it was perfect.

All these guys are like the bottom of the jenga tower - you take one out, and the vision immediately loses its cohesion. When Sakaguchi left, there was no central vision anymore.

I always thought it's cute that in modern parlance her name sounds like "selfie", which is something I could totally see her doing constantly if she had a smartphone.

Squaresoft was the goat and Square Enix is just a horrible imitation. Just look at all the money they have been burning for the last decade. Sakaguchi made 1 mistake with a poorly received movie and they can him. They had a crazy president that was trying to grift nfts for like 5 fucking years.

i think uematsu gets plenty of credit. not saying he's over credited but once he stopped doing the music FF fell off hard. only a few weirdos like the music in the games after he left.

as for sakaguchi stories havent been good since he left.

kirtase and nomura is tricky because they havent been able to accomplish anything worth while with the other pillars gone, so it makes their involvement seem inconsequential, but then you have games like fantasian where its sakaguchi an uematsu and the game is just not good.

Classic FFs weren't good just cause of Gooch and Matts. They were created by a dream team of god-tier programmers and artists whom Gooch could masterfully direct. Just having Gooch and Matts together on some rando project by a small studio like Mistwalker is not gonna replicate the same magic. And clearly, after leaving Square, Gooch never found his mojo; the whatever games he made, he was just going through the motions, without any passion, and it has only gotten worse with time.

I'm actually in the middle of playing that right now, and I think it's pretty good.
Or at least I think mechanical things like the combat system are made with enough competence to offset any lacking aspect of the plot or character writing.

I personally think the later higher fidelity of the console systems harmed it. It became much more comparable to other media and other things stuck out.

And they both worked on Fantasian. And any fan of old Final Fantasy should play it. Fantasian is great.

There are a lot problems with FF games after 9 but music was never one of them.

I'll fight you! The game starts kind of slow. And I'm actually not huge on the music either (though it is very atmospheric).
But the game picks up fairly quickly and just keeps getting better and better. After you've got your teleporter unlocked, things are already rather engaging. Then you reach the overworld. And when you've got all your party members unlocked, then the game is really rolling. But when you've got the sphere grid unlocked, it's pure fucking ludo all the way until the end.

The turnbased combat is good. And swapping between between your on-field and benched characters mid-combat is strategic and interesting. And the game is full of secrets to find and the world changes a lot as you progress, making visits to both new and old locations interesting.
It's genuinely on par with the golden age Final Fantasy games. It's good all the way through.

I think I dropped it shortly after the cruise. it was also a pain in the ass to play since I had to borrow a mac for it.

this music does nothing for me. the first bravely default was the only time I felt like square at least tried to compete with early FF music. all the modern shit just sounds like orcestrated noise.

>Sakaguchi was the creator
He didn't create shit, Kawazu, Tanaka and Ishii were the actual creators which is why FF quickly went to utter shit after they left and Sakaguchi was exposed as an irrelevant clown after he got booted and couldn't coast on other people's talent

Well. I really think you should have continued playing. But I obviously cann't force you.
But quitting Fantasian before you've even got all the characters is just not quite right. If you play far enough to unlock the sphere grid and don't like it though then I doubt you'll ever will though.
