found this game in one of the hidden gem threads
>grimdark setting with great atmosphere >fast paced combat that doesn't drag >great writing, with an extremely pessimistic MC, something rare in any medium >side content isn't plentiful, but it's good and offers some good rewards >takes between 9 to 11 hours to finishit's pretty good

sadly part 3 (the final part) isn't out and considering the time it took for part 2 I'd say we're minimum a year out from it
>>714900967 (OP)Eh. Tired of indie retrobait games. Need something more original and unique. I know that's a big ask for indie devs and their fans but I'm sure something's out there.
I never hear anyone talk about this game and its genuinely great and one of the best dungeon crawlers I have played in a long time, also really fun with friends

babby modo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1545990/Deadeye_Deepfake_Simulacrum/ - top-down immersive sim with command line hacking (think quadrilateral cowboy) and a ridiculous amount of build variety + wacky powers. fun story with a lot of branching paths too
nightmare modo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2081970/Swirl_Wtch/ - mgsv except you are in a submarine spaceship where the stealth is based around using/avoiding sonar effectively

Astalon: Tears of the Earth. Super charming retro-style metroidvania with a sort-of rogue-like twist. When you die you go back to the start of the map, but everything you've done stays unlocked, and you get a chance to visit the store for upgrades. I thought I would find it really frustrating at first, but instead I felt eager to go again with a new upgrade or two under my belt. As you progress you open up the usual shortcuts, so it never really wastes your time

Mystery chads are eating good. Here's another game focused on time loops and investigating different plots in an apartment line. Not a big fan of time-travelling features but this one looks strangely polished for a small game. 154 reviews and -50% off.
Escape From Tethys. Basically everything you'd want from a basic metroidvania. Very enjoyable for what it is

Kinda jank french 3rd person shooter/stealth/adventure thing. Lots of dickass puzzles and surprise horror twist. Incredibly soulful.
>>714917548Honestly, Rift Wizard 1 already turned me off. I remember trying to hone some necromancer style build, but then I found out it was a popular build around launch and nerfed shortly thereafter with numerous hard counters (too many to overcome imo by diversifying your build). It was borderline completely unviable.
Devs often ruin their games with balance patches, because they start building around the hardcore who already had their first time player experience and many dozens of hours before hand. They don't realize they are spoiling the first time experience of late adopters.
>>714900967 (OP)Its nuclear throne

If you are looking for a cyberpunk horror deckbuilder, where you also get to scavenge for items this is a pretty good one.
The visual style is really creepy.
>>714917902seconding this, and The End of Dyeus, by the same dev, is also pretty good, although it's a completely different kind of game, basically being a compact BOTW with classic Zelda combat in First Person

I didn't think your game would be that fun, gave it a try on a lark and was like 'damn, this is pretty neat'. Very fond of the Technomancer. I don't know why it's still sitting on mixed. Combat is janky but very fun with three different weapon styles you choose and stick with; at least two are enjoyable. The atmosphere and setting are great. Story is better from most of the slop out there but nothing spectacular but it does have a nice twist to it. Companions aren't very interesting save for a couple but they are not badly written either. They are just plain but one companion questline has a nice reveal to it at the end. It's a really decent game.
Think of a hub-based budget bioware rpg with action-combat like the witcher.

I recently found this "6 degreed of freedom" FPS genre, and I gotta say it's pretty cool. Nothing super ground breaking, but it really scratches that "FPS but in space" itch that I've had for an eternity. I turned off all the auto-alignment settings so that I have to manually pitch and roll to navigate and it's the first time in forever since I've had fun with something arcady.

Tetrachroma might be my favorite Tetris game of all time. The twist to formula is that you can only clear rows of same color, and blocks change colors of both rows and columns as long as it already is singular color.
It also has a mode for normal Tetris.

>>714939234I will definitely give this a try. The first half of the trailer and the first paragraph of the first review sold me
>I tried this game because I saw someone say it "improved on almost every aspect of Ace Attorney", which was a bold claim even to someone who loves AA, but thinks it has plenty it could improve on. Well, it delivered. I saw another review say it feels "effortless" in every aspect, which is also a rare quality for a game to have. And while I think it does feel effortless, it simultaneously feels deeply considered down to its bones. And the first chapter is free, so perfect thing to try right after work.

USE GRENADES, USE BEAR TRAPS, USE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE>you can headshot with the crossbow other than that, it's mostly about being careful and assessing what enemies are in a room and what you currently have in your inventory. Amazing game.
If the MC was named belmont and the villain was dracula it would be damn near indistinguishable from an actual castlevania game. Feels like the halfway point between rondo of blood and SOTN before the latter replaced basically replaced platforming with exploration.

Side-scrolling beat em that takes a lot of notes from Dead Cells in its structure. Play as one of 4 different classes as you run through 5 dungeons with randomly generated layouts, searching for keys and upgrades and the like, with a boss lurking at the end of each one.
The big thing is that this actually features online co-op, and for anyone like me that actually gives damn about that, you know there are shockingly few dungeon delving games with any form of exploration that actually offers online co-op. B&G is pretty simple in its combat, but it's fun enough that it makes it a good game for this type of thing, rather than just being one of few limited options. There's even fun little things, like how text chat is printed (with appropriate pauses for stuff like punctuation) typewriter style above the character's portrait on the hud, which I found to be cute.

>>714950495>it's kind of hardIt is hard at the start and the very end for entirely different reasons but the middle is a decent medium, that goes for both games. In the first game once you unlock some moves for both characters and learn how swapping works it becomes a lot smoother, the best piece of advice is to first get the cheap long range attacks for the girl and learn how your inactive party member works when not in use. Nameless Chronicles is a little different since you only play as Nameless instead of two characters and to replace swapping you can basically spend resources to super charge any attack. Fun, but it does mean you lose the safety net.
>and it feels dated and weird, but I'm enjoying itYeah, it is janky. Not so much that it feels horrible, however you'll definitely always notice it in everything from the voice acting to the animations. I think the rest of the game makes up for that and you eventually get used to even the low quality parts like The Bearer's VA who sounds like they just lured in a random girl from the street, but other people's mileage may vary.

>>714940489Depends on what you mean by arc, its like the post SOTN jumps but faster and not as much air control, its not like the classic games where you commit to jumps and hope for the best.
Having said that it has some very exacting regular, double and triple jumps along with air dashes mixed together you need to do to progress at points. The dashes can be complete bullshit because there's no rhyme or reason as to when you're supposed to press the dash button again for a second and third dash sequence. Those multi air dash sections essentially require long bouts of spamming the fuck out of the button and hoping that you happened to register the input at the right time. That and a brutal lack of checkpoints / save points are the most frustrating things about the game, I hope the dashing gets patched because its basically luck based as to whether it'll work or not. Mercifully its not required often but those sections really pissed me off and prevented me from doing an optional platforming challenge to 100% the game because it requires tons of multi dashes, thats what really soured me on that.

>>714953863Yeesh, thanks for the writeup. I'm still tentatively interested but I've become really leery of getting metroidvanias close to release precisely because of those sorts of patches. I was having a blast with Lone Fungus before the dev tried to get too cute with changing the jump arc/timing and not only did it fuck up my muscle memory but it also made some of the challenge rooms impossible until they were adjusted.
>>714953916Thanks, I will put them on the wishlist and probably pick them up down the line when I have more time. I just bought Mary Skelter 2 which includes the first game as well, on top of Aeon at the start of the sale so have a good amount to get through.

>>714953802bards tale trilogy remaster are good too but they are oldschool

>>714953982>the dev tried to get too cute with changing the jump arc/timing and not only did it fuck up my muscle memory but it also made some of the challenge rooms impossible until they were adjusted.Wow thats a really shitty move on their part. In this case I don't think anything will be adjusted beyond hopefully changing the input window for air dashing because like I said you could do the same exact timing again and he'll just fall out of the air. You can spam it and its a coin flip as to whether he'll do it or have a slight pause thus dropping you a micro fraction downwards thus screwing you out of the landing. Outside that its fair though very demanding at times.
One thing I did learn was that many, but unfortunately not all, of those sections that require multiple dashes aren't strict input sequences. What I mean by that is it may look like you have to do multiple dashes in a row but actually you can do one, double jump / triple jump right after then do another dash to finish the landing or some mix of that. For whatever reason its only the air dash input that fucks up right after doing one while every other input is responsive.
There's that and the classic obscure "where do I go?" moments where you're really pushed to get creative to progress. I got stuck once because I didn't think to double jump after falling down a loooong chasm to land on a small platform you pass way earlier in the zone. Theres also instant death rooms that are sometimes pretty subtle that something is off though after the first time I paid very close attention and never fell for one again.
I really respect the game for the old school mentality even if it can be brutal at times but thats what makes the air dash problem so infuriating, if you're going to demand exacting inputs then the game better damn well register them when I do them.

If someone complains about something you can go and deal with it and they'll actually have dialog and reward you for it. There's tons of little details like that in that in the game.

>Does it really make that much of a difference hereNot entirely. They can both be played as standalone stories so you won't miss much details per say, but they tie together to lead into the Finale game with the canon True Ending of the first game's remake. If you play 1 first you'll eventually hit a point where you can't get the proper ending because it requires beating Mary Skelter 2 to unlock the True End, so you'll have to stop playing that game mid ending scenario and play through an entire other dungeon crawler before awkwardly popping back to the first game solely to do the last little stretch of the game with a rusty outlook. Basically it'll ruin the flow.

Anyone played it?
>>714956381>If you play 1 first you'll eventually hit a point where you can't get the proper ending because it requires beating Mary Skelter 2 to unlock the True End,That's retarded but thanks for telling me, I'll do that then
AHHHHHHH I need to buy a game, but I don't know what to get. I've put like 5,000 hours into grand strategy.

>>714939234I'm back (
>>714939623) and I have to say, this was a 10/10. I didn't even like Ace Attorney but this is just perfection. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Finally, it was worth browsing a hidden gem thread.
>>714962458studio system mentioned
>>714962807I would try it, but I prefer the whole game being ready. Episodic release is like EA for me
>>714930519this game fucking blows, I really do not understand what people see in it
Putting this in my threadwatcher to read later, dont mind me
>>714920386>>714920605This. I played the demo of it ages ago and you could simply use the knife weapons dodge move and if enemies couldn't attack anyone else, they'd do nothing. Dev took until post-release to fix this. Even now, its trivially easy to get infinite turns. Knives are still free AND do better damage than most other weapons, especially on the girl. Radiation is still overly punishing and everything else no threat at all.
The dev is just not good at balancing and seems not to care.
>>714963129Needs more time in the oven, not ready to be recommended yet.
>>714962458>wooden oceanthis game gets posted in every steam sale thread and i always thought it looked interesting, but charging anything more than 5 bucks for an rpgmaker game is fucking outrageous.
>>714950261As if that wasn't obvious. I was hoping for someone to tell me whether it's actually good or not.
>>714928226This game is fascinating. I bought it when it was a newer game years ago, under a completely different name. It was so poorly designed. Guns would come with negatives better thantheir positives as their norm, the first boss had 3 forms but all others had only one so the first boss was the hardest, boss drops would just get stuck on thin-air offscreen, you had items you had to jump to get but most characters can't jump, they'd have powers or systems the game never explained and you had to unlock everything piecemeal; everything. Even the UI itself had to be unlocked bit by bit, your gear had to, the slots to put them in had to, your meters had to, everything. And every time you did, you got pulled out of what you were doing and forced to do a multi-part fight against waves of enemies; if you lost, you didn't get the unlock.
A testament to just how poor indie design can be
most of these issues still exist now, I would not recomend the game
>>714917902One of the Hiddenest Gemmenest I've ever seen. But I'm too dumb to actually finish it.
My picks:
Il-2 1946 (Steam version is outdated, but with enough patience you can upgrade to the new one).
Lost Planet
Pilots of Darsalon
Tunguska: The Visitation
Peripeteia
Vangers
Miasmata
Northern Journey
Marauder
RaiderSphere4th
Recettear
Voltage High Society

>>714940453do not be tricked. This game is shallow as fuck. Not worth the trouble of convincing your friends to grab it.
