The thing about gacha games is that they use the sunk cost fallacy to get people attached to characters. Each character has "Real world" value because they are way more rare than they should be. This means that when someone DOES get those characters they're inherently happy not because of anything regarding the character themselves, but because they have something that has artificial value.
The few times I did try Gacha games, even I felt some actual joy when I managed to pull a super rare/desired character. Not because I actually liked them or the gameplay, but because it meant I suddenly had something that other people desired and were spending tons of money/time to try and get. I inevitably quit a day or two later because the gameplay sucked, but the feeling of joy of just getting something rare that other people want is real, even if it's all artificial.

Some people get that initial joy and then play the game longer, sinking their time or god forbid money into it. Then at a certain point they will realize these games are a chore, but by then they have invested too much into the game to quit. Therefore they attach themselves to these characters because they have spent 3000 hours or dollars or some mixture of the two on them. It's like Stockholm syndrome to a virtual anime girl on top of the sunk cost.

The idea of overmoderation killing sites literally came out of 4chan, with moot basically causing gamergate to explode by calling constant moderator meetings, mass replacing and adding staff to control it, and eventually getting all of that exposed. He used moderation in an attempt to control the direction of the site and it blew up in his face.
