OOT's z targeting was more important to FPS than most of what people tout as revolutionary for the genre.

It popularizing two sticks with the xbox controller was important for consoles, but it also came with tons of limitations like two weapon limit and regenerating health. Those things aren't even that bad if you know how to design the weapon sandbox and gameplay around them, which old Bungie definitely did, but every dogshit AAA shooter trying to capture the same audience usually did not. Aim assist on console shooters is still argued over today, especially with PC crossplay.
It had a bigger focus on story than the typical shooter back then, but CE was still pretty barebones. Halo 2 had a much bigger impact on setting the standard for storytelling in shooters, as well as HL2 that launched in the same week.

>Are you still talking about Halo? This games been talked about for years. Are people still talking about this game? This Babyโ€™s First FPS? That is unbelievable. I can't believe you're posting a thread on Halo at a time like this, when we're having some of the greatest gaming, and also tragedy with Death Stranding 2. It just seems like a desecration.

I didn't care about the "new" mechanics this game brought. I simply cared that
> the atmosphere was incredible (anniversary absolutely ruined it)
> gunplay was fun as fuck
> lore was quite captivating
> honestly it's just an incredibly good game, despite the repetitive levels towards the end

What's impressive is the enemies, to this day, are more interactive than most games released since, with regards to their ability to dodge, hide, and flush you out. The only AI that rivals the amount of interactivity Halo has is F.E.A.R. The 30-second gameplay loop is the truly fun part of Halo.

If Halo's enemies worked together in a more cohesive way, it'd be more interactive than even F.E.A.R.

Boomer retards who can't think critically can seethe at this post. The entire point of games is interactivity, and most games are simply uninteractive walking simulators because the enemies do not interact with your actions in a meaningful way.

It's interesting to watch 'O Brave New World' and hear accounts of how only a few believed in Halo's potential
Even stuff like applying stuff pioneered on PCs for cooperative play were doubted just because it was being applied to console
Tragic how the series originated in defying expectations just for new employees to be even more lacking in vision and resort to (cheap) trend-chasing

It was well made enough to make FPS's comfortable to play on console, and lucky enough to be released on a console that had literally nothing else to hold it up at the time.

I recently played this for the first time, kinda liked it. I really missed out on halo as a kid and now I get what people were going crazy over.
I dont think I need to play 2 or 3, but god damn did the shotguns and pistols feel good to use.

against all logic and reason I always gravitate towards pistols in any game. usually just because they are accurate and give you a ton of ammo over the game, but wow, one tapping the hunters was hilarious
and everything about that shotgun just felt so right. almost made me forgive the stupid library just because I actually got to use the cool gun to such good effect.

Halo 2 mogs Half Life 2 as complete experiences and I'm not even baiting. The driving sections of HL2 are genuinely awful, there's too many, and they drag on way too long. It's only strengths are in denser designed sections like Ravenholm and the physics in moment to moment gameplay.
I'd even go as far to say CE is better than HL1 too and is more enjoyable on replay.

I don't usually compare games I enjoy. I suppose I can see where you're coming from but I also know that most players are way too reckless in scenarios that both demand a more tactical approach and equip you for it.
It's why Halo's Library never gave me trouble because I actually thinned the heard, looked for openings and examined the environments to find Overshields. Meanwhile, Half-Life lets you reload anywhere to try just about anything, provides plenty of cover and vehicles had infinite ammo. Yet, even in 2025 I see people play these sections far too recklessly and frustrate themselves.

Dual analog slop simply demands slow movement and uncomplicated gameplay, while console hardware demands small, static environments.
There's just not much anyone can do with FPS games while the Xbox controller still remains the lowest common denominator.

Used to feel this way coming from the Half Life scene.
As far as a narrative FPS, Halo was beaten to the punch and doesn't do anything new.
But it introduced a lot of fun mechanics that set future precedents and fantastic world building.
It's a good thing.

Halo was a dumbed down experience when it comes to FPS, Even N64 FPS games were more advanced. FPS games would get your noggin joggin, Halo on the other hand, was made for retards that didn't know how to play real FPS games, it was move forward to reach the end.
