Altering the settings is the same as choosing easy mode in my mind. Sure, you can make apocalypse mode easier, but there is what the devs intend (in any game) and what you can do to make the game easier.

Indie stone is a mildly successful dev that had a break out hit release.
That means they will never admit they made a bad choice with their game and will run it into the ground.

I love how the devs just keep on finding new ways to make the game so grindy and boring so that the player will never stick past the first 3-weeks of the game because even the devs know that the only good part of the game is the very early game. Mid to late game of project zomboid is so empty and boring that the only thing you can do is just farm and build random shit but with the carpenter nerf that option is gone. The problem is that there isn't any reason to continue once you get to that point in the game you have seen everything that the game has to offer. I have spent making different bases, collecting random shit to pimp them out but the game is still dull. They should add more events that drives the player to actually leave their base. Adding more items won't help since majority of those items are just for decoration. Louisville seemed like a good addition but then you realize that all the loot you can find in Louisville can be found in any other town, expect for the paintings but even then its just a complete waste of time. The player doesn't have anything to strive for. Mount & Blade has the same style where the player is allowed to do pretty much what they want. If they want to be a merc for hire, go for it. If they want to spend the whole game becoming a trade baron, no problem, want to become the king/queen? go for it. Unlike Zomboid the player is rewarded for that and there is a progression that the player goes through to achieve those goals, for Zomboid there is nothing. Sure you can go clear a town or visit Louisville but there is no point. Zombies don't go away, none of the loot that you find in Louisville is anything special that you can't find in the other towns. Grind your skills(Which takes fucking forever, enjoy watching a green bar fill up) but for what? The game is great for the first 2-3 in game weeks then you realize that is all the game has to offer. You can try to drag on by finding some interesting bases and fixing them up but at that point you aren't playing a zombie game, just the sims.

Zomboid is one of those "make your own fun" sandbox games, and it doesnt give everyone the tools to make their own fun.
I might enjoy the base building and decorating, where as you prefer something more like fighting off the helicopter horde.
The thing is, add to both of those (should) be an easy update as they add more stuff to the game. instead indie stone decided to add migrating deer and knapping to the game, two entirely new systems no one wanted.

The devs have a clear idea for what they want the game to be, and it is wholly different to why people enjoy the current game.

I agree, don't worry about it. I too enjoy collecting and making my base look amazing. It's great for role play but that only can carry a "zombie" game for so long especially now that they nerfed the crafting skills to the ground. I enjoyed finding cool looking areas and fortifying it but there isn't a real point when the game only rewards you for sitting at one base and turning into a cabbage farmer. I 100% agree with you. They should add more to the base building and the combat but like you said, the new 42 build decided to add 1 million zombies to clog up the towns and no way to fight back since your character gets tired after swinging a fucking bat 3 times(Also good luck finding a weapon because for some reason build 42 makes any weapon that isn't a kitchen knife non-existent).

There's a mod that let's you be a woman that gets raped and impregnated by zombies and it has a full simulation for stuff like periods, actual pregnancies, etc. You can open up a window to see the state of your womb, how much sense is in it, see the way your fetus evolves over time and keeps on growing until you eventually have to carry it to term then you get and item named "Baby" that you can decorate your room with and acts like an alarm clock every once in a while to attract zombies to it when it cries because that's the best way they were able to code the baby to work within the game's framework that doesn't actually allow for NPC humanoid characters.

#2 play on an active, moderated mutliplayer server
#3 have admins that organize events and zone areas

I've played on MP servers where we had to work together to gather stuff and clear the power plant to temporarily restore power for all of Knox County
I've seen MP servers with free for all PVP, but modded so it's disabled outside of LV (and LV has better loot spawns and more zombies, so there's reason to risk a visit)
I've played servers with extensive economies and mods that allow completely automatic player shops that work like vending machines, where a whole town and shopping district formed
I've done huge megaprojects with half the server building towers and bridges
I've disarmed nukes that would have wiped the whole server
I've failed to defend missile defense systems that got all of LV flattened by airstrikes

And yeah I've played on terrible pay to win servers and seen friendships go bad over server drama and watched more power tripping admins and mods than I can count
But if you can find a great modded server it's a totally different game
