It's modernist lingo and ideology grafted to the narrative. The species in question actually has (or had) interesting nuances and ideas surrounding gender identity. The game should have explored those ideas organically, letting the fictional setting and worldbuilding dictate the dialogue so that it was unique to the setting while still broaching the overall points they were trying to make.
