It's modernist lingo and ideology grafted to the narrative. The species in question actually has (or had) interesting nuances and ideas surrounding gender identity. The game should have explored those ideas organically, letting the fictional setting and worldbuilding dictate the dialogue so that it was unique to the setting while still broaching the overall points they were trying to make. Instead the writers took modern progressive talking points and stapled them to the script, forcing the game to conform to this blunt, uninspired mess that it is
