Sci Fi and fantasy stories don't need to go into every single minute detail of their setting and world works but they should be logical and consistent. Fallout and Dragon Age are perfect examples. Their not "realistic" but they do establish a world and rules within that world that characters follow. The problem is that the their sequels break these said rules in nonsensical ways that break the players immersion.

Forcing the player to be accepting isn't diversity, its imposing your ideology on the player and when every game has the same current year California bullshit in it that's the opposite of diversity.
