I have never played Witcher and want to start now. Should I start with Witcher 3 or start from the first one?

Start with 1 then play 2 and then 3, you should do this with any trilogy btw. In this case it's especially good because you can see how much progress they made through each game as a studio.

The games have absolutely nothing to do with the books. CDPR went so far with the games the author of the books publicly disowned the games.

It has nothing to do with how far they did or didn't go with the actual material. AS is (by his own admission) salty that he bullied them *out* of a profit/revenue-percentage deal and into a fixed sum, as he never thought TW1 would make any money. After Witcher 3 they did voluntarily give him more to shut up, though, so he stopped the trash talking.

I would start with the first one and go in with the mindset of appreciating the slavjank

First one has best atmosphere and setting, but worst mechanics, so just come prepared for that

All of them are worth playing through at least once desu

The first one is the best one, but it filters plebs by having combat that isn't stream-lined copy paste generic 3rd person action.
You can import your save from each game into the next one to carry your choices, but most of the big ones are just ignored anyway so that's not a big deal.

You can start with 2, the story is actually great
1st is jank, and starts slow, but it's a gem. 2nd is awesome, and 3 is a masterpiece.

I liked its potion mechanics the best. It's just the combat itself that comes down to basically a rhythm game owing to it being a heavily modified neverwinter nights or moving everything down with igni. But I also like rhythm games so you might see where my allegiance lies with regards to the games.

First one obviously, you moron.
It's a linear series.

Also ignore any and all console TW3 secondaries.
The series got hit hard by these retwards with TW2 already. TW1:EE is literally the only GOOD game in the franchise.

Books > TW1 > > > 3's DLC > 3 itself > > 2.

1 has far more "branching" and dynamic outcomes than ANY of the sequels.
We're talking about 5 different endings, and numerous potential changes to the 4 later chapters.

2 is irredeemable trash. The very first, literal "We want AssCreed and Demon's Souls audiences!" - the game. 3 is just generic Ubishit, shilled for barbie sex scenes.

Eh don't knock it until you try it, just play on the easy or normal mode that one's quite fun and still miles more engaging than the original. The FCR hard mode is a minmaxer mode, you must always use optimal set of potions and weapon oils or sharpening stones to stand any chance in combat.

I started with 2 when it came out, but I was surprised how much I liked 1 — it's definitely overhated. You should play the full trilogy, start to finish. Unlike other games, you won't get series fatigue easily since each title is pretty distinct.

I remember liking Exodus, but nothing particular from it has stuck in my memory. I have some vague impressions that honestly could belong to a few other games — totally unlike the first two titles, which have many memorable sequences. Even though I don't hate open worlds reflexively, I bet that the shift from linearity is responsible for this lack of distinction.

I don't think 2 is that bad. As a game it's more decent than most. Admittedly it was the one I began with (on PC) as my brother first gifted it to me. Liked it enough to get 1 immediately afterwards. Fell in love with 1 and was rather hype for 3. 3 was alright but too much right-click to glowing red spots.
>>714993782
I feel like too many people strictly equate gameplay with combat when especially RPGs usually have more to it. Character-building, exploring, talking to townsfolk are in my mind equal parts gameplay and the experience.

I read the books before even knew there were games, then I played the intro area of 3, got worried I was making un-Geralt-like choices when questioned about what happened in the previous games, went back and watched the cutscenes, then replayed the intro of 3. I really recommend anyone going into the games at least read The Last Wish. It's a compilation of short stories and the first book in the series, plus it's really short. But being that it's a compilation of stories it gives a nice broad view of the world, the principal factions, and the general morality that informs Geralts decision making.

I know I was just a bit confused with the tempus you originally used. For all its praise of story 1 is mostly book characters but swapped around. Triss is yennefer and Alvin is Ciri. But still 1 is my favourite maybe just because of the overall atmosphere and feeling.

i just replayed tw1 for the first time since like 2010, god it's so boring, just a shitload of walking across a map to talk to 1 dude then walk back

tw2 good god the combat's so poorly designed, it's entirely carried by trish's tits and i'm not joking

>>714984972 (OP)
i tbhonestly don't really think tw2 is worth playing at all, tw3 is okay but it's a bit on the big and breadly side, skyrim-esque one might say, tw1 is rough

invest a couple hours and watch a summary of the first two on youtube and read up on the major characters. then proceed with playing 3 and its both DLCs.

2 is somewhat enjoyable but altogether linear and sort of short, like a major main quest with several branching options along the way.

1 is borderline unplayable slav jank if you didn't get into it back when it came out, and you most likely won't enjoy it at all nowadays. but compared to 2 it has quite a ton of plot, notable characters and other shit that gets occasionally referenced in 3
